Guest JAMIES DAD
I have recently bought a 93 Jap import N/A Supra and would like to change the Cam Belt as I have no way of knowing how old it is. Can anyone advise me if I should just change the cam belt or if I should change the tensioner as well? Obviously cost is one issue I have to consider but I want to do the right thing. silvershark44
I wouldnt bother with spending £100 on an uprated belt. The standard is perfectly fine. Those Greddy ones just look cool. I cant see the point running uprated even if your running big power, its not as if it goes any faster.
Guest JAMIES DAD
Thanks for everyones input, I think I knew I should change the tensioners as well, just thought I would see what other people thought, think I will get standard belts from Toyota. Scooter
no rush in case you are worrying, as the belt snapping (something i've heard of once on here in 4+ yrs) won't cause any harm to the engine............
Rob
while you are there, replace the cam belt tensioner too yes. u can get the belt and tensioner for around 60quid Would you like to tell me where????? tbourner
Not on a non-interference engine like the Supe.

tbourner
Bit of info here: http://www.familycar.com/CarCare/TimingBelt.htm 3rd paragraph. Basically the valves are situated far enough away from the piston at TDC that in the event that the cams stopped and the valves froze in position, the pistons would still not smack into them at high speed!!!! Scooter
Its as Trev has said....... basically in lots of engines the space the piston occupies in its stroke is shared with the space the valves occupy during theirs. The timing belt ensures they are never in the shared space at the same time! Snapped belt and its usual for them to come into contact causing often serious damage......... In the supra (and in fact most toyota/lexus) engine there is no 'shared' space so no contact is possible...........
