juanchan
I bought my tax online last week as it ran up at the end of May. I've not received it yet. I was therefore wondering where I stand with regard to driving my car on the roads. I thought the law was that it was an offence to not display a valid tax disk, irrespective of whether the tax had been paid or not. Can anyone tell me if this is this the case? Where would I stand if I was stopped for whatever reason?

Ian W
Isn't the law that you have to have the disc displayed?

Pot
Isn't the law that you have to have the disc displayed? IIRC it's something like 'Faliure to display a valid tax disc'... But you'd have to stumble on a right jobsworth who'd do you for that... EDIT : Isn't it a non-endorseable offence? So you can't get points for it?... Guest NINJYA
i think that if you say its in the post they wont fine you - you would still have to park it off road if that is the case. I really dont think you have anything to worry about - i didnt get my tax straight away either i backdated it - only two weeks then it got sent to my old address as i hadnt changed my log book so i was without displaying it for a few weeks. You will be fine - you worry too much!!
AndyT
Always thought display was the letter of the law. We got police trying to issue fines to people with after market exhausts. They'll do anything to keep their figures up.

I always worry too much It's one of my lesser qualities that I can blame on my parents, genes and inheritance At the end of the day, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Class One
Even if the car is taxed, it is an offence to fail to display a valid excise licence for the vehicle. The licence must be affixed in the lower lefthand side of the windscreen and must be visible. There is no such thing as 15 days grace, nor will the excuse of "It's in the post" even though it's true, wear it I'm afraid. Technically, you can't drive, use or keep your vehicle on the road without the licence unless your are on your way to an mot or a garage to carry out repairs following an mot if booked by prior appointment. BTW the DVLA prosecute, NOT the Police, all they do is report you for the offence.
Guest NINJYA
i suppose it is better not to risk it - i just risk things sometimes and normally get away with it - naughty me!!

I blame the Post Office for losing my reminder - so much on at the mo I forgot until last week.

Scooter
i'd find out what happens if you were unlucky enough to get pulled and see if you are happy to risk it........... ...........it may be 'technically' be an offence but really who gives a sh*t, you're likely to commit far more serious offences on the way to and back home from the pub than this aren't you?........... Have a look here it may make you feel better? Quote from the above link "I haven't had a tax disc on my bike for 5 years. It lives in my desk drawer. If you get stopped the pleece can easily check if you have actually valid tax and if they can't be arsed it's only a producer to start with." Eve
I know it is an offence for failure to display but when the DVLA lost my reminder last year (& I keep forgetting to check the date on the disc even though IT IS IN THE WINDSCREEN OF MY CAR!) when i called in a panic they said I had a 14 day grace period. Wouldn't risk it though! There is a number to call if you have waited more than 5 working days though, this is extracted from their website; I have not received the tax disc. What should I do? If the tax disc has not arrived after 5 working days, please telephone us between 8am to 8.30pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 5.30pm Saturdays on 0870 850 4444. When you make the call, please have the Reference Number available and choose option 4 then option 1. Could try that...see what they say?

juanchan
That's ridculous. Think I'll stick to the good ol' post office for mine in the future! I would have done but I didn't get my reminder through the post. I checked the website and I'm sure it said that without the reminder you couldn't buy tax in the PO. I must have read the website incorrectly as that doesn't seem right. Wish I'd gone to the Post Office now

Pete
The licence must be affixed in the lower lefthand side of the windscreen and must be visible. Ooops. It's in the top left as the window curvature doesn't allow for the metal holder to fit properly. There is no such thing as 15 days grace, nor will the excuse of "It's in the post" even though it's true, wear it I'm afraid. Ooops. Mine ran out 4 days ago. At least it has an MOT now....that ran out in March. I've just taxed it and printed out the receipt to keep in the car. I've driven around for months having not been bothered to undo all those little screws on the metal tax disk holder before now. I guess I just got lucky.
