2nd Turbo kicking too late

Mas

Recommended Posts

Took the car to Mark today to get my MOT sorted, all the way today noticed the second turbo kicks well over 4000 REVs, actually about 4500ish , Im sure it used to kick just before 4000 before and thats the way should be, so what do you think is the problem here ?

Turbos working perfectly though and the car pulls just as good as ever but this late kicking worries me ?!

Could be anything from a cracked hose not opening up the EGCV quickly enough to a vsv fault.

If it only does this once and No-2 comes in fine every other gear and repeats this after being off boost for a while then I'd say it could be the EGBV for pre spooling No-2.

Lots of stuff to read through in the search function, seems quite common this.

Thanks alot mate I'll search for the above subjects and see what I come up with, could it be because of the disconnected VSV hose ? as we had to disconnect it once I installed my boostcontroller, due to boosting to over 1.7 bar with BPU !!! :D

then found out that hose has to be blocked and soon as I did that the boost came back to 1.2

I had a similar problem a while back, tubby #2 was coming in late, and when it did it was 'violent' as if the turbo wasn't pre-spooling properly.

Having investigated the plumbing, I discovered that one of the pipes on the EGBV actuator has rotted off (the worst pipes to reach!).

See the 2 pipes coming off the actuator (#5) here: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/attachment.php?attachmentid=13950&d=1112559186

Having replaced the pipe with the aid of my dad (a mechanic) and plenty of swearing, its been fine since.

Don't know if it's the same for the Seq setup, but Greg @ Turbofit mentioned on the singles that a later spool time generally means the turbo is getting weaker. Can't remember who it was specifically, but theirs had gone from a spool rate + 800 odd or something.

Mine goes like the clappers from 4k exactly thank the lord :) I wouldn't worry about it Mas. Run it til she blows mate ;)

thanks for all the help guys, as I said they perform perfectly and pull same as before once they kick off, so I might just try and play with some of the mentioned hoses and if nothing changed I just get n with it til they die ;)

That didnt mean Im gonna go single though :D

Mas as you know I'm no techie car expert but my 2nd cuts in just a smidge before 4000 (assuming my rev counter is accurate)

Thats the way should be Henk, mine used to kick about 4000, but not anymore!

Guys regarding this thread: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=35926

"Usually this is caused by no prespool taking place - your IACV opens, your EGCV opens, but the second turbo is sat on it's ass doing nothing. So, not only has it got to suddenly get up to speed, but it's fighting against #1's output trying to go backwards through it. Hence, the looong lag.

This is usually caused by the EGBV not opening. You may notice more than 0.8bar of boost being generated by #1 turbo because of this, as the EGBV also acts as #1's wastegate."

I just can't find any info to direct me to the exact part that needs to be replaced or fixed!

might sounds dum but I tried the VSV related hoses and no split etc whatso ever!

is the problem erratic?

My other car used to either 2nd turbo didnt kick in at all, sometimes came on song at the right time and sometimes really late .The problem was the pressure tank.

More and more times now its occuring that pressure tanks are playing up on peoples cars.

no its not erratic, same thing keeps happening without changing the way it is, kicks at around 5000 revs which is late! it only started doing it since saturday (or atleast then was when I noticed it)

I'm gonna check the pressure tanks too if I know what Im looking at :D.

The pressure tank is located under the bottom inlet manifold runners and is a bitch to get at.

The best way to get it out is get underneath and remove the starter motor which is in the way, then you can get the damn thing out and swap it for the new one.
