Oil leak help please!

Recommended Posts

Finally get my turbo working fine and my map looking good and another problem rears it's ugly head, a hefty oil leak. Looking underneath I believe it's coming from the oil pump area. Reading the service manual it says it's an engine out job to fix, please say it isn't so!!!!

I would be grateful for any help on this matter and if anyone has had similar problems. When I upgraded to the single turbo I used a thinner oil as per the oil FAQ on this site.

If this is an easily identified problem could any of the workshops/traders give me an idea on much it will cost to fix, I have run out of energy and time to start on another area of the car[sAD][/sAD]

when its at the bottom of the engine like that, sump or similer its either bottom subframe steering rach off or engine out, i think the latter is easier from what ive heard

Probably a silly question but would excess pressure cause an non faulty seal to leak? i.e. pressure comes down, seal stops leaking?

Old thread revival: rpslaughter1982, were those photos taken with the engine tray removed from the car? I'm losing oil from somewhere and I'm trawling old threads trying to trace the source of the leak.

Did you get your leak fixed?

Looks like classic front main seal failure, and from my findings on this and Chris Wilson's, + a lot of others, the problem is usually down to the oil pump being worn, so just replacing the seal is only a temporary solution, a new oil pump is needed, see the post on seal failure in this section.

I think that might be my problem too. I just haven't had a chance to take the engine cover etc off yet. How expensive is it to fix?

You dont have to take the engine out at all to get the sump off (well i didnt but i have an n/a). All i had to do when taking sump off was undo both the engine mount nuts underneath the car. And then just use an engine crane to hoist it up a few inches, you then have enough room to slide the sump out.
