Ive just bought a new laptop which i have connected to my home network.

Is there a way i can send files (photos, movies, music files etc) from the old laptop to the new one via my router?

Or is it a case of copying everything onto CD's?

The simplest method would be to create a network share on the machine with the music on, and map it as a network drive on the other machine. You can then copy the files off locally.

And how would one go about that my good fellow?

I'm poopoo kaka when it come to computers.

I don't know a great deal about Vista, but to share the files from the old laptop you can right click on the folder containing the files and select "Sharing and Security"

In the "Network sharing and security" section

either click the "If you understand ...." link and just enable sharing or select the Network Setup Wizard

enable Share this folder on the network

and give it a name

or Network Wizard:

Next

Next

you might need to ignore disconnected hardware

Other

First Option

Enter a name in the computer name e.g. oldlaptop

Next

Turn on file and printer sharing

Yes

Next

then

enable Share this folder on the network

and give it a name e.g. musicshare

from the new laptop there should be a means to map a network drive somwhere - I don't know where

or you should be able to type the following into explorer

\\oldlaptop\musicshare

this should then bring up the music folder from the old laptop on the new laptop

and breathe ;)
