Camshaft question

don't forget you might have to reshim the hydraulic lifter clearances :)

Hydraulic lifters are self adjusting, but the MKIV engines have shims atop the buckets (cheapo design, but adequate for the lifts and RPM's used). These need checking and probably changing when you replace cams, but not if you just replace the cam drive wheels, obviously.

I take it youve got the head off then kev. Whats the news on the sticky valves. I still havent got my head finished. I can only do i when im on nights, less chiefs around.

Sorry to butt in guys.

Well the valves pushed back up easily enough but the camshaft has scored marks where the caps sit and hold the shafts on. It's currently at a shop getting looked at and hopefully shimmed. Then I'll be taking the valves out and replacing the oil seal stems and cleaning everything up.

Thats the plan with me also. Im almost finished now. Any clues yet on why this has happened.

The cams run direct in the head, no shell bearings. if the journals are scored the heads effectively scrap as re sizing and honing will cost about 20 times the cost of a good secondhand head. the usual reason 9in 90% of cases) for this to happen is oil strvation up to the head, either through dirt, or oil pump / strainer problems. If the cam bearings are shot the crank bearings will also be *uggered, unless you are incredibly lucky. It needs a full strip, clean and inspection.
