Kev.O
I'm possibly thinking of replacing my UK camshafts but was wondering if the HKS ones simply drop in and that's it or do they need the timing to be altered?
Gamer
AFAIK HKS recommend that you use the stock cam timing settings and then tune from there if necessary.
Kev.O
Probably a daft question but I take it I need to replace the cams aswell?
Gamer
I assume you mean the cam gears ? If so no you do not need to change them but you will if you want to make any adjustments.

absz
don't forget you might have to reshim the hydraulic lifter clearances

Ian C
don't forget you might have to reshim the hydraulic lifter clearances Hydraulic lifters?! It's not a pushrod V8 -Ian
Chris Wilson
don't forget you might have to reshim the hydraulic lifter clearances Hydraulic lifters are self adjusting, but the MKIV engines have shims atop the buckets (cheapo design, but adequate for the lifts and RPM's used). These need checking and probably changing when you replace cams, but not if you just replace the cam drive wheels, obviously.

It's currently at a shop getting looked at and hopefully shimmed. Then I'll be taking the valves out and replacing the oil seal stems and cleaning everything up. hodge
Thats the plan with me also. Im almost finished now. Any clues yet on why this has happened.
Chris Wilson
Thats the plan with me also. Im almost finished now. Any clues yet on why this has happened. The cams run direct in the head, no shell bearings. if the journals are scored the heads effectively scrap as re sizing and honing will cost about 20 times the cost of a good secondhand head. the usual reason 9in 90% of cases) for this to happen is oil strvation up to the head, either through dirt, or oil pump / strainer problems. If the cam bearings are shot the crank bearings will also be *uggered, unless you are incredibly lucky. It needs a full strip, clean and inspection.
