Lee,

Been over to see Leon today, he confirmed that either one or both the turbo's have blown the blades off.! :(

And yep, I'll hopefully be replacing them with a nice pair of stage 3 hybrids.! :)

Alex - JB has offered me a full refund, dam nice chap.!!

Ok, so I lied about the refund.! ;)

In my defence they worked fine everytime I took it up to 1.8bar......only joking.

The turbos had been running a lot of boost for quite a while but had never shown signs of failure. It does seem to be the way that a slightly different driving style seems to be enough to make the turbos fail.

I am putting some money towards the hybrids as I feel it was partially my fault somewhere along the line.

JB

ps - also in my defence Barry and turbos have never really seen eye to eye....

I suppose you could say I've had more turbo's than cars.!

I went through 6 on the five Renault 5 turbo's I've had, now two on the Supra.!

8 turbo's on 6 cars! :(  And to be honest I cant see why as I always let them cool down after a long run, drive the last 2 miles of a journey without even using the turbo then idle for 3-4 mins before I switch off.!

Don't steel turbo blades take your engine out when they fail unlike the ceramic ones that just dust?

I don't think they fall apart like the ceramic jobbies.

Track days are going to be fun when it comes to having a drive of otehr members cars.

"Shit, here's Barry... Run like f**K

"

;)

Sincerely, sorry to hear about your turbo's Barry.

The hybrids do rock though.

Cheers Brad, dont let me near your motor if you still want it in one piece.!!!

The last turbo I done on the 5 was total bearing failure, the shaft was so loose the blades were scraping against the conpressor housing and when I removed it to have a look what the damage was, the tips of the blades were bent at 90deg angles.!

So I'd say that they are alot stronger than the ceramic jobbies.

What oil are you running? Just curious.

To be fair I think everyone blows the turbos on Renault 5's, kinda like head gaskets on MKIII's...

Ever considered buying an NA?!?

It is usually the turbine in the exhaust which fails, and it just disappears off down the exhaust. The top of my No1 cat caught the remains, and looked like it had been shot with a 12 bore! With no cats you could spit the bits clean out of the exhaust.

If the intake wheel fails, the bits would have to make it through the intercooler piping before they got to damage any expensive bits. This wheel has a much easier life than the one dangling out into the exhaust gases, so is much less likely to fail anyway.

The 5 is always treated to Mobil 1 Motorsport fully synthetic 15w50.

Alot of the 5 turbo owners found that '0w**' oil was too thin and tended to get past the oil seals in the turbo and burn off.
