carl0s
All the above are 'bridge' or super-zoom cameras, e.g. SLR-like Cameras, but they're not SLR's. That's not such a bad thing as you get great V.F.M amongst other things. I've taken quite a shine to the Fujifilm S6500fd, (called the S6000fd in non-UK markets) and will be getting one soon. This camera has only 6mp, but the actual resolution of the output is far superior to many higher pixel-count cameras and Canon, Sony & Panasonic's offerings in the 6-8mpx segment. Good review here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilms6000fd/ Here are the resolution shots: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilms6000fd/page13.asp

Ewen
Jessops sell previously owned cameras.......some absolutely mint / boxed / warranty too. I bought my son a high-end Nikon at 50% off new list price, and it was totally mint, with expensive extras. Savings are considerable, may be worth comparing a high spec pre-owned Nikon digital SLR with new lesser spec ??
Ian W
That website that jamesmark gave seems to be pretty frikkin good on prices! hell yeah it does. i bought my olympus mju 810 compact digital about six months ago for £200 (which was a fantastic price), now they're doing the olympus mju 1000 for £210!! that's a 10mp olympus digital compact camera for £
carl0s
Well, I got my Fuji s6500fd today, and it looks very good. There is one thing that's disappointed me, and I am beginning to understand that this is the same for any "super zoom/bridge/psuedo-SLR" camera, and that's depth of field - there's too much of it. At the widest aperature (f2.8), the background is still clearly visable (but a little out of focus). I want to be able to completely blur the background on closeup shots of certain objects, which it looks like I can't do with this camera due to the smaller sensor size compared to that of an SLR. Apart from this, it looks great. It certainly feels great, and I understand the long-distance telefocus shots are superb with this camera. Indoor photos in 'Auto' mode without flash are useless - the camera decides to make use of its ultra-sensitive ISO-3200 sensitivity/film speed equiv, and this is just far too noisey. I mean *far* too noisey. It should instead use a lower sensitivity and a larger aperature or longer exposure time, but at least once you know this you can instead use one of the other modes, which either have their own ISO limits (ISO 800 in portrait for example), or allow you total control of the sens from ISO 100 to 3200 anyway. This only applies if you disable the flash of course, it's just that I don't like the effect flash has on peoples skin tone. Overall I'm pleased with this camera, and I think it's going to take fabulous outdoor shots, but I really really do like those blurred no-depth-of-field shots of objects like watches, and for this reason I am going to pay close attention to entry-level SLR prices and may at some point sell this camera and buy one. Kittyclaws
Go for an SLR I've seen some good deals on Canon 350D's now the 400 is out. Canon EOS 400D is good. Best one to go for is the 350D, like Thorin said, there are good deals now due to the new 400D. but the 400D is hardly any better than the 350D. the 350D is 8 Megapixels, where as the 400D is 10 Megapixels, but what lets down the 400D is the sensor size, it is the same size as the 350D, which effects the quality of the picture you take. Don't get me wrong, the 400D is still a cracking camera, but I would still choose the 350D Nikon or Canon mate yep, can't go wrong with either. I prefer Canon myself. Here is my little baby. A Canon 350D with BG-3 battery grip, Speedlite 580EX, and EF 75-300mm Lens fitted. also have the standard lens it came with ( not bad) and a 50mm prime lens (cracking lens)
Pot
As someone who knows nothing about cameras... And tbh, doesn't want to trawl through google and so on (I'm sorry, let me off, it's Xmas apparently ) What does one need to take the 'Top Gear' style shots?... (Where it's a bit fish-eye and really contrasted??)

Pot
Doesn't it need a special lense though?...
Kittyclaws
Doesn't it need a special lense though?... Yes, you will need to buy a wide angle lens. but there are loads of lenses to choose from, for instance i could buy a EF lens for mine (Canon's own) or a Sigma or Tamron. I keep an eye out for second hand, either in local shop or Ebay. Or better still, buy abroad. I brought my Flash gun and 75-300mm lens in St Maarten. here in the UK the Flash is £290 and the lens is £150. Over there i got both for £270, big saving
geoffvalenti
With most digital SLRs availaible at the moment, you'll get what is known as a "cropped sensor" which means the size of the sensor compared to 35mm film. Most manufacturers are around 1.6 crop which means that the image produced is 1.6 times larger than it would be on a 35mm film sensor. This is great for telephoto shots as your 300mm lens is now equivalent to a 480mm lens!, but conversely for wide angle shots your 20mm ultra wide, is now only a 32mm wide lens. Saying that Sigma (and others) make a 12-24 mm (19-38mm equivalent) but obviously at a cost. I'm just pointing this out, as you mentioned fish eye style shots and to get that sort of shot on a cropped sensor camera requires a stupidly wide angle lens, at ridiculous cost
Kittyclaws
Yes, there is that too. the sort of pics you see in car mags etc, are taken with top of the range kit

For instance the pic of the supe at night time the blue one with (blurry) buildings in the background... slow shutter speed no tripod used, a pile of w**k. What i'm trying to say is... you can have all the kit but no idea on the principles of photography eg. rule of thirds, frame within a frame, depth of focus, depth of field etc to make a photo work. Couldnt agree more with the above, it seems of late loads of people are buying some nice camera's expecting every photo to be amazing and that they'll be an instant pro, I also agree with the mag photo's, I have yet to see a nice photo that has really impressed me in a magazine! I'd recommened an Canon due to the sheer amount of lenses avaialble, I was told otherwise before I bought my nikon, but on the whole there seem to be a hell of lot more canon users. also for more info etc check out(Canon forum) http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum
