JamesG
I'm on holiday (with a bad cold ) and have been pottering around today doing random stuff. This might interest some of the IT bods here. I went wardriving with my Sharp Zaurus PDA, and plotted the wireless access points I found onto Google Earth. Green dots are encrypted (WEP, WPA etc..), red dots are unencrypted. In built-up areas, it picks up a new access point every few seconds. Here's a pic - by the way it's Stannington, Sheffield: http://www.compsoc.man.ac.uk/~jamesg/misc/wardriving.jpg

Pete
A guy that works for me has his Carputer all setup. He wrote a script to plot all wireless access points (with names etc) and record his GPS location to pull into mapping software. He also uses the open access points to auto update mail etc when he's near one!

Pabs
I used to do this with my carPC - used netstumbler and other s/w to produce a 2d roadmap of my area and unprotected wifi spots. was good fun Don't need to do it now though - in the block of flats i live in theres about 3 so i'm never without internet access! (I do pay for my own broadband mind - i'm not some cheeky scav)
i-macca
Not cheeky at all IMO, if it's not secured, it's fair game
