Jim_1979
What's the deal with getting done for exhaust noise levels? I've been fined £30 once in the past with a different car. Just the other day a female member of my staff was pulled over in an old escort with an aftermarket exhaust on it. Not stupid loud, but a little loud. I don't get what the deal is with this. Fair enough, if you drive around and around and around the same little one way circuit where you live late at night, then the coppers should pull them over as it can get a little annoying. But for simply driving about mid afternoon?? Anyone got any idea? When I was pulled they handed me some photocopied thing saying it was an offence to alter the exhaust system!??! The police told her that changing the exhaust from standard is classed as an offence etc and if she was pulled over again, she could face an asbo?!?! This wasn't in the evening, it was mid-afternoon!!!?! Police around here need to get a grip!! Especially in a high performance car... obviously you're gonna change the exhaust system!??!?!?! RANT OVER!! ....
matt k
What car were you driving when you were fined? I have never had any problems with the Police over my exhaust(touch wood) and it is pretty loud, i think that the Police expect the Supra to sound loud as it looks fast as fook, where as a Corsa with a 4" exhaust just looks stupid, sounds crap and is obviously "modified". Jim_1979
I was pulled in my old Pulsar. De-cat and large mongoose exhaust. It was loud! The thing that annoyed me was that I had just brought the car back from manchester and as soon as I got into my town I was pulled??!?!
ChrisSZ
Might be a local 'initiative' - I run an RS-R on my N/A - mostly with the baffle out - and have never had a problem
Jim_1979
Yeah, I think it is a local thing around the borders. Trying to peev off the "boy racers" who drive around and around town. If I got fined I would seriously try to contest it!!
ivan
Maybe it's a Scotland thing? (Not wishing to offend any Scots, but you do tend to have your own rules for a lot of other stuff.)
Robbo
I have heard this before too. Every Sunday there is or should I say was (police have put a stop to it) a meet on where all types of cars turned up, mainly jap. A few of the lads got pulled for the noise of their exhaust, one lad had an aftermarket exhaust on his Civic Type R and it is loud but not as loud as mine on my Supra but I think he got a fine or a caution from the police!!! I didn't realise there were any laws on changing your exhaust??
Rob
I'm sure there is no law. I think you can be done for removing the cats when the vehicle is supposed to have them, but that is a different offence based on MOT and emissions, and far from the one described. "Altering an exhaust" whatever next? They'll be imposing some sort of speed restrictions, I'll bet.
Daston
Yeah when I got done for speeding they causioned me about the thing is the normal traffic cop dosnt carry the equipment to test it (think its 98db) and if they want me to pop by for a test then fine I'll just chuck the baffle in. lucasl
Funny thing this i was talking to a guy who races cars in the paris/dakar he was saying that the actual exhaust noise limit on a road car in uk is 100db and on some racetracks its limited to 95db stupid really. Jim_1979
so as long as it's under 100db they can't do anything??
Pete
so as long as it's under 100db they can't do anything?? It's been discussed before and I can't remember the outcome. SVA tested my Tiger at 101dB to pass. Some discussion here - http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=80202&highlight=noise
Kranz
The police told her that changing the exhaust from standard is classed as an offence etc and if she was pulled over again, she could face an asbo?!?! D I doubt it would be an ASBO, that's not what they're made for. ASBO's also take lots of incidents & complaints to even get considered.... at least 20 complaints I'd say for a court to issue even an interim ASBO. More likely a Section 59 Police Reform Act 2002. Get one warning, then if there's another incident within 12 months the vehicle gets confiscated! Applies to the person & the vehicle, so if the person is driving someone else's vehicle on the second occasion that can be siezed. It really is intended for antisocial behaviour such as mini motos or chav cruisers that drive round & round all night annoying residents. You shouldn't get a S59 for just driving home from work with a slightly noisy exhaust.
