brake judder - what is cause?

It could be disks, but it could also be a knackered wheel bearing.

 

Jack the car up and see if there is any side to side play on each of the wheels, if there is any movement then you'll need a new bearing. The nearside ones tend to go first, as the wheels on this side are prone to being curbed.
