i-macca Posted October 17, 2006 Share Posted October 17, 2006 Right, this has started since I changed the oil and filter on Sunday. Unless there's something strange about the Supra, these two things are not connected, but I'm wondering if I've disturbed something whilst trying to get the oil filter out of the stupidly small gap.. Basically, now when I boost through the rev range, the first turbo seems to boost pretty much normally, but there is a dip in power and then a sudden surge as the second turbo comes online. Before, this was much smoother, and there was no dip in power. Nothing else has changed, same boost etc. and I had done an ECU reset Saturday afternoon which had cured the car being a bit lethargic (ECU had been reset a couple of days before and hadn't learnt very well). Car is idling properly so doesn't seem like it has an air leak.. I've also had a problem with it starting for a couple of weeks, doesn't always want to start in the morning. Often the first time you crank it over it will be a bit reluctant to catch and then die once it has started. Sometimes when you try the second time it won't start at all, and you have to crank it for 15-20 seconds before it will catch and then hold the revs up for 5-10 seconds at which point it will idle normally, and other times it will start second time perfectly and idle as it should on a cold start. I think the idle controller valve might be quite sticky, as whenever the ECU is reset, it will take around 40 miles to learn to idle, withouth dying every time you pull up at a junction. I would think that the idle controller being sticky might be affecting the starting, but not the strange boost? Any ideas people? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They tend to have a hose that goes from the throttle body and into the fuel regulator, it could be possible you may have disturbed it. Also have a look at how your Apexi AVC-R is plumbed in perhaps. i-macca Posted October 18, 2006 Author Share Posted October 18, 2006 Mods have been on there pretty much since I got the car, so a few months and have done about 4-5000 miles on them. Have got NGK Iridium's in there which are the correct grade for around the 1.2bar mark. I'm not running the boost controller at the moment, but without the cats it naturally boosts to between 1-1.2bar depending on the weather conditions. Sounds fine at idle. And strangely it started fine in the cold last night and this morning. I don't think it is a misfire, doesn't feel like one. In my experience on turbocharged cars a misfire under boost is quite harsh. This is much more like the timing being pulled.. Not sure if a small leak somewhere would have the same effect. i-macca Posted October 26, 2006 Author Share Posted October 26, 2006 Gonna bring this back up Checked all the hoses and can't find any missing/loose/hanging off/split anywhere.. So the only weak point I could think of was where my intake temperature sensor sits in the intake. Took this out and reset the ECU and the car was noticeably different. Then yesterday I noticed that the boost was getting a tad high, hitting 1.4bar on the second turbo, and quite quickly. Watching a bit closer driving round, I'm hitting 1.1bar at 2500rpm on the first turbo, then 1.4 as soon as the second turbo kicks in. Now it does feel like it's going well, I'm not sure about 1.1bar on the first turbo well, but then I can't see that the first turbo would produce this pressure by 2500rpm?! Seems mad...
