Roundup of turbo failures?

Recommended Posts

This might sound a bit rich coming from an SZ owner, but...

I was just wondering if it was about time we had a roundup of people's turbo failures? As someone else recently pointed out, it seems to be happening a lot recently. Given my post about durability in General Discussion last week, I thought it might be an interesting exercise to get a summary of who has failed their turbos and under what circumstances just in case there is a common theme to the failures which could be avoided by future owners.

Useful data might be:

Steel or ceramic.

Stock or hybrid.

Boost pressure.

EGT (if known).

Age at failure (in years and miles).

Service schedule followed.

Other mods (especialy induction filters, oil coolers, etc.)

Type of failure (impeller, turbine, oil seals, bearing etc.)

Good idea...?

Induction HKS / OilCooler / SBC-ID

Blades all gone turbo 2

I really dont want to remember that sound and smoke again OK!

Alsothe EGT's were too high cos the fuelling was crap for what I was boosting

Same car - hybrids in / 550's / UK Spec Pump / FSE etc - and now EGTs 75/100degrees less despite bigger turbos

Well, we could move it to members only if people are suddenly going to get all coy about their driving style :innocent:

EGT would be a good one to log but I guess relatively few people have a gauge. I've added it to the list in the first post anyway.

Mine didn't really "go" as such but they were on their way out so I replaced them - oil seals and huge shaft play.

Steel & Stock

Boost pressure - standard up until late last year, then 1.2 bar max

Age at failure - about 10 years and 85k

Service schedule followed - Full Toyota history and oil changes every 3k since I got it (or every 300 miles recently!)

Other mods - IK's, AVC-R, Decats and NuR

Type of failure - shaft play and seals

I'm guessing that the addition of the free flowing exhaust highlighted the problem to me, had there been more back pressure I might not have noticed it for a while.

ceramic

stock

1 bar !!! (prior setting was 1.15 bar max)

unknown exactly - egt gauge was hovering around 900-920 mark and mine is plumbed in b4 the turbos

10 yrs/ apprx 50k miles (can't remember what it came over in KM)

serviced every 3k - ie. full service done twice in last year, once with cambelt

mods - 264 cams, ERL, hiper zorst, full decat, blitz induction, HkS I/C

not too sure - 2nd turbo not boosting at all, blades missing from 2nd turbo but can't tell how many, shaft play from 1st turbo also

driving style considered to be quite mild when compared to a few on here who shall remain nameless .. :innocent: :p :D
