Turbo has 'popped'!

Right guys, thanks for you help diagnosing the problem from the previous thread.

http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=80411

I know this may seem strange( I don't normally fist my soop) but i just put my hand up the exhaust pipe and found a hanfull of what can only be described as little ceramic pieces :(

Conclusive evidance (i think) that one of my turbo's has gone pop. :(

My questions now are,What other damage might this have caused?

and, whether it could be very carfully driven to a workshop where I could leave it and contemplate my next move?

what sort of speed were you doing when it gave up? and what boost ? dout you done any real damage as the bits would have to find there way tho the intercooler to get to the engine which i cant see happen! should be ok to drive off boost just might smoke a bit. hope you get it fixed mate

thanks mate, was doing about a ton at about 1.0 bar.

Wanted to limp the car back to the workshop but was worried about causing more damage. But what you said makes sense...its got to work its way throught the intercooler to get to the engine. So driving off boost should be ok ?

Bits in the exhaust pipe could be the ceramic turbine blades that have disintegrated... if it had done that there would have been a catastrophic failure of the turbo and the oil seals would have blown, with oil going into the exhaust making smoke & no boost.

The change in exhaust note will be the easy path for exhaust past the turbine wheel and possibly due to the shaft siezing as the bearings would have got a good pounding as the turbo vibrated itself to death.

Bits of aluminium probably went into the intercooler too. I have seen a number of turbos blow up (I even snapped the shaft on one & hydraulic'd the engine on its own oil!!) but the intercooler always catches the bits :) There should be no problem with the engine, jus the turbo.

Take the compresor outlet pipe(s) off and take a look at the compressor wheel. If its knackered then its new turbo time. Its easier to check than the exhaust turbine.

If its ok then check the exhaust turbine.

If both are ok then ???? Wastegate???

Sounds like that's what you have??

The compressor side will be fine and nothing will have gone into the IC.

It'll just be the ceramic exhaust side that will have blown, the bits will just get spat out the exhaust and have done no damage. I presume you don't have a cat fitted if they have come out of the tail pipe right?

Provided you are not getting smoke out the back then you should be fine to drive it, although take things steady.

mate sorry to here this, might be worth giving turbofit a call

im sure with the amount of single upgrades they do they must have a fair few stock turbos lying about :)

Thanks guys, some good advice there.

I managed to limp it carefully back to the workshop off boost, it was a bit smokey but drove ok so I think the damage was probably limited to the tubbies (I hope).

Just got to find out what went wrong to caused the over boost (if that’s what happened) and contemplate my next move.....Replace j-specs.....hybrids....???

I'm sure I will be pestering you all with more questions in the days/ weeks to come and your help is much appreciated.

Thanks again,

Sam
