grahamc
Just wondering how active exhausts work? Heard them on the aston (awesome) and the ferrari, just wondering how the get the sound? I know they are faked.
ChrisSZ
From what I can work out they have a 'variable baffle' type of thing fitted. At low speed/revs it's closed to keep the noise down and as the revs rise it opens to allow more gasses/noise out. Not really fake.
grahamc
Ok, I was under the impression that the higher revving sound was faked. Makes sense though... thanks!
mikeyb10supra
put your turbos in parralell mode, will work the same although wil be open all the time
Syed Shah
You can get an exhaust butterfly to do this and just get it to open at higher RPMs.
Ark
You can tune exhaust cans to sound however you want, so with a switchable valve, you can open a noisy pipe for higher revs, plus gain the benefit of faster gas flow.
Nic
You can get an exhaust butterfly to do this and just get it to open at higher RPMs. Apexi make these products, they are silencers though rather than, variable baffles. edd_t
lol not just the big cars have it. the later MG TF's had it too! you can also get a pipe from demon tweeks (or them sort of places) that you can fit to do a very similar thing.
Kittyclaws
I think a certain amount of back pressure helps with performance too, The Yamaha FZR 1000 had one too (EXUP valve)
Digsy
Yeah its not just done for noise, sometimes there is a valve that closes to provide some backpressure for tuning.

Nic
Message for Animal who asked me about the active tail silencer (cannot pm or email you) The Active Tail Silencer comes in 2 versions for either 115mm diameter and 90mm diameter. Adapters are also available to fit 120mm and 100mm diameter tail pipes. Tail pipe needs to be at least 80mm length inside. I'll need to check the current price and get back to you.
