Sheefa Posted August 10, 2006 Share Posted August 10, 2006 Hi all, Was driving Supra last night without any probs. Came to start her this morning and the dash lights just flicker and it makes a ticking noise. Doesn't seem to turn over though. If I try and start it the SatNav switches offer too so i'm thinking it has to be a power loss. Spoke to Chris Wilson (booked in for a service this coming Monday) and he believes it must be the battery. Cou;d also be a poor alternator, or more annoyingly, a bust started motor. Gonna try and jump start it later as didn't have time. Just wondered if the breakdown cover you take out with Sky covers home fault diagnosis and whether I can get them to test electrics and resolve? tbourner Posted August 10, 2006 Share Posted August 10, 2006 Sounds like a battery. Did it take more than 2 or 3 turns to start before? Mine used to turn quite slowly about 5 times then start and drive fine, but eventually it turned over twice then gave up and started ticking. Didn't really have a problem starting before, then again, sometimes it blipped out and wouldnt start first time....occassionally second. Do you think it could be something more serious or am I relatively 'safe' with the battery, alternator......possibly starter motor? If it clicks multiple times in the on posisition (hold it there as if you were cranking it)i think it means battery. If just once then turn key back to off then back to on again it means starter motor. Not very technically proficient so replacing the starter motor with a bit of my DIY would probably end up in complete car failure! Here's hoping it is just the battery. tbourner Posted August 10, 2006 Share Posted August 10, 2006 FYI battery might not be easy to change, my j-spec had smaller terminals on the battery, I had to get someone to change the connectors on the cabling so I could use a new battery!!! Sheefa Posted August 11, 2006 Author Share Posted August 11, 2006 Update: All, it was just a flat battery. There was no spark at all at terminals. Put it on 15 mins power charger normally used for giant wagons and up and running fine. I take it my immobiliser, alarm, satnav, road angel, boost controller and fuel/air gauge must drain quite a bit of power from a 8-9 year old battery!!!! Terminals were also slightly dodgy. All sorted now. Chris Wilson's gonna source and fit me a new battery on Monday during service so looking forward to a 'faultless' car! Cheers for your help all. Bob Posted August 11, 2006 Share Posted August 11, 2006 If you've got a multimeter, check the battery voltage across the terminals with the car engine running. Might be that the alternator isn't chraging the battery as well as it could. Also check the voltage between the terminals with the engine off, and check with someone cranking the engine. i had a similar problem with an Exide Maxxima battery (or whatever the hell the thing was called - big blue bastard!). When I checked the voltage whilst cranking, it was dropping to 4.3V which would indicate that some doobries inside that I don't know much about have busted!
