Jake
I finally got my car back from Tuning Japanese (yes, I know) today. The guy reckons he's mapped it to 1.8 bar on Optimax. Isn't that too much boost for our relatively poor quality UK fuel? I do have WI fitted but I'd rather not rely on it. (Full spec in my vbGarage here if it helps) Any thoughts? JamieP
I bet 1.8 bar is fun...there is a few people running that sort of boost on optimax... i think i read that paul wiffin runs 1.9bar on optimax
Jake
Yeah it's fast but it's worrying me to death. I've turned it down for now.
Wez
With the fueling and ignition setup properly it should be ok. Is your WI also injecting meths (50/50 mix), if so this would also help but as you say, would not want to rely on that always being available. RobSheffield
no opinions on the optimax thing (sorry i cant be of any less help ) but i am glad you are going to TOTB, as id like to finally meet you
uk-rich
i see you have the same ecu as me, it can be mapped at different boost levels i.e 1.4-1.6-1.8 etc. this can be done with the addition of a simple rotary switch. you could save the water injection(which can be controlled by the motec) for 1.8 bar

JamieP
ive been running 1.7 bar for the past few months (mapped by tuning jap) and its been fine... and i drive my car very hard, lots of top speed runs. Ive just changed over to a AEM ecu.. its being mapped today and tomorrow by turbofits new mapper and im going for 1.8 bar:)

Guest Terry S
Big turbo's like boost, but EGT's dont like a lack of timing.
Jake
My EGT probe is mounted about 2 inches after the turbo. What EGT is considered the safe limit with the probe in that position?
Simon
If I read that right what you are measuring is an average egt from all of the cylinders. One might actually be running hotter than you are measuring. IIRC the best place would the the exhaust manifold by Number 6 pot.
Guest Terry S
That is a loaded question Jake. IMHO 1.8 is far too much boost for optimax and a stock compression ratio. To achieve this without detonation it would require the ignition timing to be severely retarded. This is counter productive, will increase thermal stresses and raise EGT's. Again IMHO, you are better off running reasonable boost say 1.4 bar, and more timing. This will give you a more efficient, durable set up.
mikeyb10supra
I do have WI fitted but I'd rather not rely on it. Any thoughts? where are the jets mounted...are they near the compressor and I take it one right near the throttle?
Guest Terry S
oh one more thing Jake, where is your turbo on it's compressor map @ 1.8bar. Is it still efficient?
Jake
I don't know, Terry. I've never seen a compressor map for this turbo. It says on the PHR website it can run 29psi (2.0 bar) with the right fuelling.

Many of the smaller turbos arent happily in their efficiency island at higher boost pressures.
Jake
Who is the guy at PHR? Is that Jarrett? I'll try to get a compressor map from him. If I get one would you mind having a butcher's at it for me?
