A lot of choice at that price James....have you decided what sort of bike you need ? Full suspension or front shocks and hard tail ? Do you want a lightweight cross-country or a heavier free-style / downhillish one ? Theres a lot of top end brands that make each type, so its a bit of a minefield....Specialized / Kona / Scott / Orange I like myself, but theres loads more.

The Bike Lab in Poole (near the Dolphin Centre, opposite Barclays House) is a good place to spend an hour, and the guys there are very knowledgable.

My biggest tip is to put as much money as possible into the frame choice, next the drive train, next the brakes. That is, when deciding what offers the best value for money spec wise, remember that you can up-grade the ancilliaries later as and when, but the frame is the most expensive bit.

http://www.evanscycles.com/ good place to start

You can have mine for £3 k, Ive a bad knee.

i use to do cross country (i had a ridgeback) but im more into doing down hill now. I dont want a heavy bike and to be honest the downhill i do will be the more controlled and skilled so guess free style and not true downhill (ive done downhill before...slipped off the peddles, im sure the rest doesnt need explaining)

Does the scheme allow you to buy secondhand ? There be bargains ahoy, aaarrrrh.

If you want new, Giant do some excellent packages re value for money.

The bike shop at West Parley (near Haskins) stock Giant as well as others. Our company has a similar scheme going, but cycling to work is sooo not me:)

Manage to smash a Giant frame jumping a bomb hole. My Specialised has done the same jump many times, it also went pretty well on its own while I hugged a tree.!

LOL I have a company that can supply you with a specialist aircraft technician designed bike that will cost however much your company will pay with an in your pocket discount that your company doesnt need to know about :) The bike may look a little like an N/A exhaust that I need shifting out my garage sharpish as I am moving to Holland fulltime in 2 weeks.

as it happens, i just bought myself one of these. £375 second hand but it's got some 'extras' on it from when it was new. highly recommend Kona's as well, shame you can't get a 2nd hand one as that bike Martin has would be a very good buy.

Kona does make f*cking awesome bikes

my house-mate has bought himself a second hand Cowan signature which was built rather than ordered whole, fantastic bike and it looks stunning too.

I ride a Bianchi Wannabee Hardtail with all Shimano XT components on Sun Rhino Lites

any pics of your bike jspec?
