carl0s
are you ready for this ... you'll never guess.. (actually you might). They were doing a 260gb backup from the night before. For some reason they'd decided to fit the new LTO Autoloader in the sister company - backing up EVERYTHING of course via the 100mbps link. I was under the impression that they were backing up the server that they used (for very little), but no, it was all 6/7, and a load of workstations. The 260gb backup took 19hrs, averaging 260mb/min, which is about 4.35mb/sec. That's not too far off half of the 100mbps links full capability. Then there's all the depots, both VPN and Serial which pull their workload through that same 100mbps interface on the 177 subnet, and the sister company actually trying to do work through that same link. Oh and all all the Internet traffic for the main company, sister company, and serial leased line folks, is all going through 192.168.177.50. I should have set up a mangement port on the switch and sniffed properly instead of just looking at the Internet side of things. Oh well.. hindsight. We're going the ISA route some time soon, in an evening.

carl0s
Are you using Teaming per chance? Martin, what made you suggest teaming? As it happens, he has mentioned another problem to me. The server which runs the clock-card (clocking-in) machine software lost communication with most/all of the clock-card units. One of these units was showing abnormal constant dim-flickering of the activity light on the cheap netgear switch it was plugged into - exactly the same symptons as I have seen twice previously with faulty NICs. This also happens to be the same machine which was doing the 260gb backup across the network. This machine has two teamed HP gigabit NICs (copper I think). Unplugging one of the teamed NICs from the Catalyst 5500 fixed the problem with the clock-card machines. So.. .. what made you mention Teaming? thanks mate.
