Guru
Any ideas how to loosen it? I have changed the oil filter so the car is jacked up with one wheel missing. Don't really want to start it (safety first) or do I? How can I get the temperature sensor out so I can try using a socket set?
Scooter
How can I get the temperature sensor out so I can try using a socket set? can you not just find something tubular to put over the spanner that will give you the extra leverage that you need. If you get a long enough tube, you can use your leg (or get a friend) to apply the torque whilst holding the open end of the spanner on the bolt. Guru
I haven't got that many tools though
Scooter
you must have the right spanner though, yes? Have you got any cable ties? Thinking along the lines of cable tieing/gaffa taping the spanner to a bar (broom handle old golf club? basically anything long and stiff..) overlaping them as much as possible. It won't be pretty but all you need is to make a relatively solid joint between the spanner and (substitute) extension bar.........
Whitesupraboy2
ok so you dont have many tools. Put the spanner on the bolt, then get another spanner hand on each end and push the middle of the spanner your holding down on the spanner on the nut. I've used this technique before, you may have to lie on your belly
Jake
Is the problem that you can only get an open ended spanner on the hex head, because of the Temp sensor wires? I would use a good quality, decent size adjustable spanner. You can often get a tighter grip on the bolt with a good adjustable than you would get with an open ended spanner and the extra length of it helps with the leverage. Guru
Yeah the temp sensor wires are in the way of me using a socket wrench top get it off. I am gonna go out for Round 2 of getting it off so will be back soon....

Guru
Ok so it is the sump then......damn that sucker is on strong though......and its not a 14mm spanner size like other posts say......
uk-rich
14mm is the size for the standard plug, is there not a connector you can undo and get a ring spanner on it
Guru
Got it! I used a slightly bigger spanner....19mm I think...and a load of WD40 and it gave in muhahaha! Thanks to all that helped
Chris Wilson
Take the wire off at the connector about 10 inches from the sender, then you can use a ring spanner, slipped over the tail of the wire. Open ended are not correct for things that are tight. I think they are 17 or 19 mm, makes vary.
UltraFlynn
Thanks for this thread. I'm going to try my first oil change in a few weeks time and it's good to see some of the pitfalls. (I'm utterly mechanically inept!)
Scooter
well you should be fine, Guru's problems stem from not being able to use a socket on the sump bolt due to the non standard temp probe he has drilled into it. The problem you may have is undoing the filter. Well worth having a go at this before tackling the job, it may just be finger tight, but they can be a pain. i'd advise you to get one of these type filter removers as they will loosen the tightest of filters

Scooter
well it certainly looks like it will do the job and handy with the socket attachment.
garethr
I think a proper oil filter socket makes it easier still
