Oil filter location

Guru

Recommended Posts

I am going to change my oil next week and have been looking for info on how to do it. I now have all the parts and tools but one thing is getting in my way for a perfect weekend next week......where is the filter?

I have been using Picture 1 to locate it but can't positivly identify it! The rest of the pictures is what I am dealing with......

Please no jokes this is a serious thread :taped:

On the right of the engine looking at it from the front.

You should be able to change it from above, but I prefer to do it from underneath removing the sump cover from under the car.

Yours is white with red writing on it.

Have you changed oil on a car before or do I need to advise you about putting some oil in the filter first, some around the rim of the filter where it contacts, using a new sump plug gasket (not always necessary), jacking up on a side which will let the most oil out, doing it on a warm engine, it takes a while for it to reach the sump so don't over fill, re-checking the levels after a run etc. etc.

Bugger thats what I thought it was. It is quite a way down there isn't it :(

Any idea what make it is?

That's why I go in the bottom (fnar). It's only a few screws to get the tray off to a point where you can reach round.

No idea on make, not one I've seen before. I use Fram filters via Chris Wilson now.

Says FX-81 Delph on the side but can't read anymore. I don't think I can get the whole undertray off easy with just a trolley jack :( Looks like the battery and some braided hoses have to move before I can even touch it lol......

You're better off using a screwdriver :rlol:

Seriously, I just jack the car up and wiggle underneath it. (after supporting of course.)

When I changed mine, I had to unbolt the powersteering reservoir and move it out of the wasy, it's a royal PITA to get at. If you've got fairly chunky forearms then you might struggle. I also tried it from below, but that wasn't any easier either.

Pix yours is slightly to the right of where my one is?!?!?!

Pete I will give it a try but if you hear a loud scream within the next week you should assume the worst.....

Thanks for your help though mate ;)

From your pictures your oil filter looks a lot easier to access than mine is. :(

That's bizarre. Your pic is where I remember the oil filter to be. Why would Gurus be different? Guru - you sure there's nothing to the right like in Pixelfills image?

There's no need to unbolt anything to take an oil filter off.

Ok I got some more pictures as this seems a little strange. Where Pix's filter is I have the item in Picture 1. This is some how connected to the white cylinder via the blue and red connectors I think.....

EDIT: Oil cooler kit me thinks

It might just be a relocation adaptor in which case you will just have a supply and a return line from the old location directly to the filter.

If there is also an aftermarket cooler present then one line will go direct between the filter and the stock location. The other line will divert off somewhere else (probably behind the passenger headlight) before returning to the old filter location.

You lucky boy

I don't know what you'll need to do to get the oil out of the cooler, as presumably there'll be a 'stat to prevent the cooler "overcooling" the oil. you might need to drain the oil cooler manually, then make sure that you fill it again, otherwise the first time the stat kicks in your engine will get starved of oil.

I'd seek some advice from someone on here who has an oil cooler attached, Terry_S, Chris Wilson, migster maybe able to help.
