Bobbeh
Group of thugs have been driving around robbing people lately in Atlanta. This time, they picked the wrong target - an Ex Marine. ~5 thugs, 1 with a shotgun, 1 with a .380 and 1 with a knife. He kicks the shotgun out of the one guy's hands, stabs the chick with the knife (killing her), stabs the guy that had the shotgun (critical condition) and the .380 misfires. The others take off running and get caught at the hospital. http://www.accessnorthga.com/news/ap_newfullstory.asp?ID=75890 .... and to think, you'd do that in this country you'd probably be the one in jail. TRD3000GT
Yep and they'd be suing the balls off you! Not at all.. Self defence you can pretty much do what ever you want. You even allowed to stop someone breaking and entering now if its a vehicle or your house you can use the force you feel necessary to stop them.. i.e. bat the F**k out of them
Ewen
A former Marine turned the tables on his attackers, killing one and wounding another with a knife as they tried to rob him, police said. Thomas Autry was walking to his girlfriend's home from his job waiting tables at a restaurant in Midtown Atlanta around 11 p.m. Monday when he was approached by five people in a car, Atlanta police detective Danny Stephens said. Autry began running down the street yelling for help as four people in the car got out and chased him. One of the attackers had a shotgun and another had a pistol, Stephens said. The suspects eventually caught up with Autry. But Autry, who managed to pull a knife out of his backpack, kicked the shotgun out of one of the attacker's hands. He then stabbed a teenage girl who jumped on him and a man who attacked him. The suspects ran back to their car and drove off. Police found them later at a hospital, where the teenage girl, who was pregnant, was pronounced dead. Another man was in critical condition, Stephens said. Stephens credited Autry's military training with helping him fend off his attackers, who are suspected of having committed other robberies in the area over the last week. "I would say he had to do what he had to do to stop the threat," Stephens said. "You can tell his training kicked in and he knew what to do." The suspects will face robbery and aggravated assault charges, Stephens said. With the suspects in custody, police now expect to solve other recent robberies. "One of these guys confessed to me that they were robbing people all week long," he said. Autry, who will not be charged, suffered a cut to his hand and a bruise on his chest, Stephens said. Stephens said Autry had stated "I take no shit from gun-happy punks, but that guy Jake scares the heck outa me".

People who know martial arts have been getting in trouble recently for fighting back, being classed as going too far etc because the attackers were hospitalized..... Elliot
Hero. It's horrible that the baby died, but wonder what if it would have turned out like raised (or dumped in a wheely bin) by a mother who's too busy out with a gang armed-robbing people. Isn't the fact he had a knife in his backpack a little giveaway that he knew what he was going to do if needed? I thought that you couldn't intend to cause harm with self defence. ie You're not allowed to carry a baseball bat under your car for self defence or something like that? (but I've heard steering locks are handy)
Nick
Not at all.. Self defence you can pretty much do what ever you want. In the US or UK ? I always thought it was reasonable force in the UK, but that's a grey area in itself.

garetheves
The term i think is "reasonable Force". If you can justify the amount of force you used to stop an attacker as "reasonable" then you will prob get off on a self defence plea. I remember a story of a old boss of mine who is a 3rd Dan in Wing Chung. He got attacked by a group of 5 lads one lad, put them all in hospital with various broken bones and breathing difficulties. He got off on self defence by pleaing that he was forced to use all his martial arts "skills" because there was 5 of them. The copper on the scene shook his hand at the time but stnading up to them. They were so pissed they didn't even see me stood by my car (it was dark and I was wearing a black coat). I didn't quite break his shin-bone but it wasn't far off!! :)
andrew7
In the US or UK ? I always thought it was reasonable force in the UK, but that's a grey area in itself. It's reasonable force in proportion to what you think is going to be inflicted on you... Maybe the way to think is this: In every instance of violence there is a varying chance that you can lose your life, depending on the circumstances. If it is a bad situation and you think it is a life threatening situation then you are entitled to defend yourself against it. For example, if your attacker says something like, "I'm going to kill you" then you can defend yourself however you want to save your own life. Remember this, it may save your life and liberty... tbourner
The police and more importantly the courts are sticklers for writing everything down and precise levels of evidence, so if it comes to the police taking a statement you only have to say something like "I feared for my life as he ran at me...." or "I honestly thought he would cut my arm off...." then you will get away with using a similar level of force against the attacker. jim_supra
Good on him, what else was he supposed to do with 5 people robbing him at gun point. If people are prepared to Steal from, and attack other people they must be prepared to get the same back.
