4th at 30 mph ?!?!?

i go 1st, 2nd, 3rd...6th. only changing down to 4th if going up hill. It sits nicely just over 1,000 rpm in 6th and feels more comfortable.

Would i be getting better fuel consumption if i kept it in 3rd or 4th ?

I'm amazed that some people actually sit in 5th, or even 6th at 30mph! I'd be in 3rd if it's a short 30mph stretch, so I can accelerate quickly when it ends, or if it's a longer stretch of 30mph cruising, or I'm behind a tractor/learner/coffin dodger/twat, I'll stick it in 4th as it's unlikely I'll need any kind of great acceleration!

The ABD say you should be in 3rd because the revs are higher; you are more likely to notice a change in engine noise and hence you are less likely to wander over the limit - this in turn means you don't need to check your speedo as often as you would do in 4th gear and therefore are more aware of your driving.

4th gear @ 1800rpm

An advanced driver wouldn't have to accelerate out the way of something suddenly ;)

This was my thougt too...why do 'advanced drivers know that 4th is THE gear to be in?!'

sounds like a load of crap to me, there is no perfect gear for speed.
