Dont use the PC much so seeing if there were any free good ones about?? Many thanks Stephen
jamesmark
why not pay for a new one, zonealarm is top notch, has firewall, virus, spyware detector i mean unless your skint or just tight lol it will only cost you £30 if that

RedM
AVG and Zonealarm Pro here. Just waiting for someone to come along extolling the virtues of hardware firewalls!
Thorin
Free version of AVG http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01 (they don't make it that easy to find the free version so I linked to the page).
Thorin
Zonealarm Pro here. Pfftt, what you using that crap for... You wanna get yourself a router/modem with a hardware firewall! (Which most already do of sorts, enable NAT - Network Address Translation and that's pretty much all you should need)
garetheves
NOD 32 for Anti Virus and the free Firewall from Zonelabs like everyone else has said.
Jake
iAgree with Thorin 100%. I don't use any software firewall, haven't done for the last 3+ years, no problems at all. My router does it all just fine. Zone Alarm is horrible. For antivirus I use the free Personal version of Avast. It's good. I used to use AVG but it let me down badly once. Gaz6002
Don't you think that if you pay for a service you should expect money to be spent making this service better than everything else? Hence why I have paid for Norton 2006 even though I had to turn off half its settings. Using a "free" programme is asking for backdoor visitors if you know what I mean I'm sure i'm not the most technical on this subject but hey, I work in the business... Thorin
Norton. Why do people still use that bloated piece of crap? We used to use it at my last work, I had to ring up three times in one year after a virus update had flagged up a completely innocent file as a virus and deleted it (different files each time too). Useless. Sad day when they bought out Sygate.

Sad day when they bought out Sygate. lol and maybe you would think that the Escort Cosworth was a great car, but ONLY after a few mods.... there is no "out of the box" anti-virus because of the virus writers, they are just too far ahead. All you can do is be safe EDIT: and 3 times in one year is good for the IT industry!
Jake
What router do you have, Jake? A proper one or one from PC World?Netgear DG824M. Had it for years. Does everything I need. Wireless (only 802.11b but hey), router, firewall, etc
Thorin
EDIT: and 3 times in one year is good for the IT industry! It's not, it's shocking. Every other anti-virus solution I've used in the past three years or so is better than Norton. In a corporate environment Mcafee is much better (although I'm still not completely happy with that but there's not that many other solutions out there for large corporate environments). Like you said yourself, you turned most of the crap in Norton off. I just want an anti-virus program, and I'd prefer a company spent money improving that rather than trying to bundle more products with which to break your computer. Gaz6002
mate in the constantly changing "IT" environment 3 fuck-ups in a year is pretty damn good! there are thousands of hackers trying to find out these loopholes trust me just be greatful... norton only breaks your comp if you confuse it with other products (i.e. windows firewall) its pretty impressive otherwise mate. maybe look @ downloading a free version off one of these "torrent" jobbies, and when u find out how 2 crack it u can use it 4 life EDIT: oh yeah mate, and if an antivirus system warns you less, then how is THAT better? garethrees
About a 1 year ago there was one particular new virus, it hit loads of places nothing could detect it. I was running AVG on 1 PC, Symantec on another, and Norton on another. They all failed to find the virus, but the first one to be updated and fix the problem was AVG Free. Since then I use AVG Free as they provided a patch in 3 hours, the others took till the USA came online they both took about 8 hours. Just my 2p worth. Thorin
mate in the constantly changing "IT" environment 3 fuck-ups in a year is pretty damn good! And I say no it isn't, three fuckups a year is bye bye license renewal time. Twice it completely cocked up a mission critical application. If you're happy with it then fine... but there's much better anti-virus solutions out there. If you could just have the anti-virus portion of Norton then it would be better, but it's still not very good.
V
Bloody hell – didn’t realise I’ve just opened a big can worms here Thorin: thanks for the link. I couldn’t find the free link after 10 minutes of hunting, so cheers for that. I’ll probably go for this or the AVAST. Both seem to be corporate ones with free home uses which i'm assuming is a good thing Anyone know if you can attach AVG Firewall to the Anti virus for free or this this bit a bought extra? Can anyone easily explain how I get a Firewall through a router? And why this is better? (Links will do) And whats the MS XP Firewall like? i'm assuming crap? Many thanks people PS. I probably only go on line once a month, so £30 a year didnt appeal to me.
TRD3000GT
A few of you might want to try Bit Defender... Out of about 5 pieces of software tried I have ended up buying this one.. It small discreet and works very well

Thorin
Anyone know if you can attach AVG Firewall to the Anti virus for free or this this bit a bought extra? I think the AVG Firewall product is AVG Pro plus a rebadged Kerio personal firewall (I know they used to bundle Kerio with some of their products anyway), it's very good. Outpost is another one I've not used but I've heard good things about. Can anyone easily explain how I get a Firewall through a router? And why this is better? (Links will do) With most internet service providers you get a cheap USB Modem, which are ok but not that great. A proper ADSL router you'll connect to via a network connection and most have at least NAT and often some firewall stuff as well. And whats the MS XP Firewall like? i'm assuming crap? Actually pretty good... but only at blocking incoming stuff, which to be honest I think is enough. Other software firewalls are better at blocking outgoing stuff (for example if you had some rogue spyware on your machine trying to connect out on to the internet to give away your bank details). If you've got good, up to date antivirus and some form of spyware protection (Windows Defender is very good by the way, and also free) then I really don't see much need for the outgoing protection. Oh and AVAST is also good... but I didn't like the interface so stuck with AVG.
Ulrik
The best OVERALL is Antivirus: NOD32 Firewall: ZoneAlarm Pro I had Norton for about 5 years. But then tryed this combination, i found more virus then Norton ever did. Much more secure. And take like 0 % of your computer
