CJ
No, not the novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky but more about a post that Supragal recently submitted when she said: "Punishment hardly fits the crime. Never does. Like for like thats what I say. You steal something, they take your valuables. You rape someone, knob chopped off, murder someone, goodbye. that kinda thing. it'll stop a lot I assure you. I'd put my life savings on it". I don't agree as if certain punishments really stopped types of crime then the USA should not have any murders given that they still have the death penalty. What do you folks think? Send them to jail and when they come out they have to steal again to live...its a vicous circle...i do feel a bit sorry for them, it must be hard to get out of the gutter
jim_supra
Maybe not eye for an eye. or at least not in the majority of cases, as I still agree with the death penalty. but I do think there should be a real deterrent in going to prison. It shouldn't be 'easy' time.

jim_supra
In all cases where someone dies as a result of anothers actions? I wouldn't say in all cases, and that's where the issue would get complicated, I would say Obviously Murder, and other premeditated attacks which result in death. Definitely as a deterrent aswell, I don't agree with vigilanteism (spelling) in that respect.
Clarkey
I'm sure everyone will agree that the punishments for pedophilles are too lax. If you don't think the eye-4-eye punishments fit .... what would you suggest for child molesters ?
Ewen
Death penalty - fatally flawed due to the fact that many 'guilty' parties turn out to be totally innocent, Jail - breeds contempt / resentment and acts as a university training lightweights how to become hardcore, Fines - dont get paid, We are too far gone Im afraid.....decades of social freefall, atrochious parenthood and dgaf education. IMO
Gamer
In all cases where someone dies as a result of anothers actions? And as a deterant or as a revenge? All of the above... In cases where someone dies as a result of another's actions, the death penalty is used only in premeditated murder and extreme circumstances. I believe without the DP there would be even more murders ect. No point trying to compare crime over there with crime over here as guns are usually involved in the States so there is a need for harsher penalties for mis-use. If you don't think the eye-4-eye punishments fit .... what would you suggest for child molesters ? I am not sugesting that any of the punishments fit. I am asking if people agree with Supragal that they are a good enough deterent. My question being that if we adopt the eye for an eye type rule, would that cut down on the amount of crime? As for child molesters, my own thoughts are to somehow castrate them so that their sex urges no longer exist - and then lock them up.

jim_supra
Death penalty - fatally flawed due to the fact that many 'guilty' parties turn out to be totally innocent, Agreed, system is flawed, but there are cases (albeit not a great deal) that can be proved beyond doubt. We are too far gone Im afraid.....decades of social freefall, atrochious parenthood and dgaf education. IMO Totally agree. Unfortunately. it's terrible that that should be the case. What about causing death by dangerous driving? Not premeditated I grant you - but very few murders actually are premeditated. And yet it cannot be classe as a crime of passion either. Clarkey
I am asking if people agree with Supragal that they are a good enough deterent. No, they're not. On the first offence (Stuff like Auto-Theft) - what possible motivation does the offenders have ... to NOT re-offend ? Not much, I'd wager. What good does 80 hours community service do ? They do the 80hrs, slap on the wrists .. and then on they're merry way. If we adopt the eye for an eye type rule, would that cut down on the amount of crime? I think so. Look at Saudi. Not much crime there ... and those criminals that are there ... are lucky enough NOT to get caught. As for child molesters, my own thoughts are to somehow castrate them so that their sex urges no longer exist - and then lock them up. Again, I reckon that's too lax. On this subject - it's not just the immediate abuse ... it's the long-term effects that are more harmful. Shoot them. Plain & simple.

Ewen
Tother problem with the death penalty, as seen in the States, is the protracted system of appeals and delays sometimes going on for years...Im not on the side of those on death row, but Im sure that the UK would have identical issues if it ever brought back the death penalty. In the States, this weird way of keeping the legal system up front is probably gonna end up with the abolishment of the DP. Put em all in a ship, and send em to Australia instead. jamesmark
I am a full supporter of the Death penalty, but i believe that with our justice system as flawed as it is i wish that the death penalty never ever gets considered in britian again. there is to much bent people in this world, capital punishment should only be given if forensic evidence is there and has been checked re checked and checked again and that there has not been any evidence of foul play to incriminate the person, as in child molesters they should be locked up without parole, but again our laws are such that even those people have rights, but they took that poor childs rights to have a normal life away when they commited there sick act. i better stop there as i am the type of person to open a can o worms lol
