b_have
Just had a call from my dad who has inadvertantly changed his desktop shortcut icons. They now appear with the writing contained in a blue shaded background. I had this problem a while ago but can't remember how I fixed it (something to do with syncronisation?) Lewis
try this, if it doesnt work then its a registry change : Open System Properties in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop option, and click Ok

I dont think he has encrypted his desktop shortcuts lol yup that's the one. I've seen this once or twice too. I can't remember if something stupid like forcing a rebuild of the shell icon cache sorted it... or if it was another performance related option under the advanced desktop/appearance properties. b_have
Just to let you know how to make the blueness (!) what he did was right click an avatar, clicked 'set as desktop item' and clicked ok in the next box. Bingo! Try it yourselves if you like blue shadows!
Pixelfill
Just tried that with your avatar mr have, I got lovely black surrounds to all my desktop icon labels. When I closed the active desktop "AVATAR" the icon labels reverted to normal transparent ones. For future reference disabling the active desktop seems to fix it.
