Supragal
Good news for you Rosie if you go with royal canin, both the dogs will be using the maxi baby dogfood so you wont be buying two seperate bags, it is one of the better foods have a look here http://www.royalcanin.co.uk/ they woild be on the maxi all the way through their lives, we used to buy it from pets at home buy royal canin stopped supplying it to them because they were selling it too cheap, we now buy it from a small supplier at around £37 per large bag lots of them do large breeds puppy, how can anyone possibly know which is best? Different vets say different things, different breeders use different things. Seems more complex than horse food but it can't be really...

Charlotte
The explanation I heard was that 2 of them were perfect but 1 had been ill as a puppy and never socialised, so was a nightmare, which would make sense. They didn't say what she did though? yeah the one that had been ill was younger than the others and was making the other two play up too. She just taught the owners to be in charge the women was almost frightened to tell them off cause they were huge and she couldn't control them. She took the dog out to get him to meet others and it wasn't that he was agressive, just frightened, you missed a good un. Absolutely gorgeous dogs. Yes basically you are right, vets will try to push a certain supplier but nutrition wise they are similar

Paul
Bakers Complete Senior, cause he's getting an old sod now:) Our dogs started on Iams but seemed to put on too much weight plus their ethics stink. Then spent years on James Well Beloved Kibble, good stuff, only took Sam off this because he got bored of it. Now on Bakers because he eats the lot, loves it, and he likes the picture of 'Pippin' on the box (bit of label slave:D ) Paul
Supragal
now I like the looks of bakers but they don't do a puppy for large breeds, so I think it will be Iams, more because of availability than anything!

What's wrong with the 'Puppy/Junior' they do? Iams do loads of different types but alot of it is bullsh*t imo , designer dog food. It goes in one end and comes out the other, usually on your carpet for the first few weeks, if it's designed for puppies then just give them more of it if they are a larger type dog. Max Headroom
I'm not really asking what I should feed my dogs specifically, just wondering what peoples thoughts on the brands were. For example, the science plan one is twice the price of Iams/Pedigree/Bakers etc, is it really twice as good? If so, why would anyone ever buy anything else? Or, Iams test dog food on dogs, like lab tests (and I don't mean the retreiver kind) do people not buy brands because of that etc If a can of dog food cost £1 and another cost £2 but my dog would only eat the £2 tin I would buy it rather than spend £1 on food he wont eat. therefore saving me money. I usually have to buy Butchers, Bakers Dried, but they wont eat it till they have had the scraps from my tea. Oh and they absolutely adore Markies as a treat. Gazboy
What's wrong with the 'Puppy/Junior' they do? This is what I feed my 14 month old Staffy. He has 2 tins of Butchers Puppy food (he isn't keen on the Rabbit though, so if anyone wants to trade 4 tins of Rabbit for 4 Beef...) as well as a cup or two of the Bakers P/J. He also gets a few markeys/chew strips a day. Currently destroying a Paddywack to cheer him up as he's just been started on by a 16 stone "thing" (think very hairy Bull Mastiff and you're there) and he's feeling down. jamesmark
science diet, its the one recomended by vets and not as bad and as crude for them as normal tinned dog meat like pedigree chum
Gazboy
My dog won't even sniff Pedigree Chum...
Steviekid
If your dog is healthy with no digestive disorders then any commercial diet will do the job perfectly well. Some brands are richer than others (e.g. pedigree chum) whereas some like chappie have less fat and are easier to break down but again, this is only relevant if the dog has an intestinal condition that affects it's digestive capability. Don't get me wrong, the science plan/eukanuba/hills/waltham etc. series are excellent products but I personally couldn't justify the extra expensive to owners without good reason. Having said that, if you buy big enough bags they're not that much more expensive and if that's what your dog likes and you're happy to pay for it then it's all good
