wireless aol help please

went round my girlfriends arntys sunday (pretty hung over may i add)

for a cupa.

while i was there i thought i'd set up her new wireless adsl router.

i set up the usuall security stuff, wep, changed password ect.

i set the user name and password in the adsl part of the router, but nothing works internet wise.

she is using aol (i hate aol)

i had aol years ago and remembered not being able to set up the aol account without installing the aol cr@ppy software.

 

anyone using AOL via a wireless adsl router? (that works)

 

i'm going back round there on thursday, so i want to be armed with a few ideas

 

its a netgear (the best ) 108 mbps btw

I've done this a few times with AOL, and yes, I hate it as well

 

You need to check the VPI/VCI settings, as sometimes the router comes configured with the wrong ones out of the box.

 

Set them at VCI=0 and VPI=38

 

Then just enter their screen name (arnty;)@aol.com) and password in the appropriate boxes and away it should go.

 

With AOL its always a good idea to log the router on with an alias screen name, that way the user can check their email etc from outside of the home LAN. Otherwise it throws error messages about being logged on somewhere else.

 

Without trying to teach my grandmother You have checked that all the phones, on that line in the house, have got filters on

 

Personally, I always administer the router, and check internet access etc via a wired connection, then when it works, set up the wireless sh*t.

 

You're probably doing this already, it just wasn't 100% clear in your post.

Also not worked with netgear (as i would rather slam my testicals in a rusty shed door!) but do you have status lights as in is it able to detect an ADSL signal or show when PPP is running?

The trick with AOL is to set the router for the unusual MTU size isn't it? Or is that another provider? Try googling for 'AOL MTU'

 

And as Geoff says, VCI/VPI is 0/38 for all BT-supplied DSL in the UK. Encalsulation is VC-type or VC-Mux, PPP-over-ATM (PPPoA)

Here you go:

The product itself is one of the best routers i have ever used. The wireless reception is excellent and covers an average house at a consistant level of between 80% - 100%.

 

The point i would like to make is about AOL. As its been pointed out in another review you may experence problems when using this and AOL. This router is one of very few which are supported by AOL, this means they will help you installing it, it doesnt mean it will work easily straight away!.

 

The chances are you will install this product in 5mins using its wizard and your connection will work, however you wont be able to load certain secure sites (hotmail, microsoft, myspace, online banks, etc). To get past this i discovered AOL deals with secure connections in an unusual way, so you need to set the following, in settings:

 

1. In the "WAN SETUP" tick "Respond to pings" and also change the MTU SIZE to a figure of 1400.

 

2. In "Services" enable ports TCP 443-448 in incoming and outgoing ports.

 

3. and finally in "Wireless Settings", change the security options to enable, a WEP (Wired Privacy) and set a password.

 

By doing these steps AOL should allow you to open secure connections, and then this router is absolutly perfect operating on an AOL connection. Dont be put off as its likely that these problems will be experence with any router on AOL. Best of luck.

My only advice is to slap the gf until she comes out of her AOL trance so you can sign her up with a proper ISP......

Couldn't agree more im on 10meg ntl, much better imo.

i am on AOL with a netgear wireless router and not running AOL software

yep i can do a backup file. Drop me a PM mate and ill do you a copy, though u may have to wait till tomorrow around 6ish for it.

 

It'll be from model below 54mbps one but i dont see problem with importing settings into yours.

 

hmmm thinking bout it i got mac addressing on at mo ill have to turn that off briefly or ull lock urself out ur own network
