Paul Laing
I wouldn't mind knowing this aswell, as mine also idles quiet high, but i just thought this was normal? If not then turning it down would be great, as the neighbours must hate me Paul
Digsy
I think its normal, guys. At least, mine does it too.
Paul Laing
Spoke to a few people about this on supraforums. Apparently it's normal and can't be turned up or down. Paul

dandan
Mine idles high, typically 900-1000rpm, sometimes it drops a little lower but NEVER to 600rpm. When sat idling it cycles from 900 up to 1100 for around 10 or 11 secs then back to 900 for about 40 secs then up again. Quite annoying! Any ideas people or anyone have anything similar? Steve Cargill
Mine normally idles just over 500. The jumping about is probably caused by the air con compressor starting and stopping. Sometimes I get the high idle (>1000), not had it for a while though.
Guest Terry S
They also seem to rise/drop dependant on the quality of fuel. If I ran race fuel, or Toluene in mine the idle RPM would drop below 500.

When i start my car it shoots up to about 1700 then about 3 - 6 seconds later settles at 700 - 800 rpm.
Steve W
Mine:- If STONE cold (early morn') - ~1400/1500 and almost immediately drops to ~1300. Then, slowly drops as temp rises to the 'bottom' white line on Temp till ~ 1000. then as it warms to the '1/2' way mark it does the final settle to ~800. I had my idle rise to ~1200 - no matter WHAT temp - a month or two ago - that WAS the IAC/ICV.. it had a small piece of 'gasket' caught under it's 'seat' so COULDN'T shut to the HOT position ! ! ! A/C makes it rise/fall by ~200 revs - ie. 800-1000-800-1000 (or ~200 variation if still on high Idle) ? ? ? ?............

dandan
I understand that air con will result in rise/fall of rpm but what if rpm rises and falls in the pattern i described above regardless of aircon on or off? I always run optimax from same place so for me it's not fuel related. Cold start 1200-1300 ish then drops very soon to 900ish. Then begins cycling upto 1100 is and back and forth. Any ideas, or areas i can investigate?
Steve W
NO, you're right, shouldn't really vary up/down once warmed properly ! ! ! Not by much anyhow. (I suppose mine alters by ~ +/- 50 ? ? ie 750-850 -ish ? ? but, even then, only slowly if REALLY thrashed or cruised or sumthin' ?) Minor air leak ?? Is it sort of 'Hunting' ie High-Low-High in ~1/2-1 second cycles ? ? ? ? FatS.
dandan
No it's odd. It will idle at say 850rpm for about 40secs then rise to 1100rpm for 10secs then drop back down again. Then cycles as described. I'm sure it's not a leak as it makes a clunking noise when it rises (as if some mechanism stepped in to raise it on purpose). It follows a regular pattern too. Steve W
mmmmmmm........ the 'CLUNK' sounds exactly like the Air Con clutch locking in ! ! ! ! ! you SURE your A/C isn't on when it happens ! ! ! (nb. you know it comes on regardless if you switch the SCREEN position on ? - NOT being PATRONISING ! ! ! ) FatS.
dandan
I'll double check to make sure, i've got a feeling it may well be when the aircon is on. Should it cycle up and down though?

Steve W
What do you mean "not on your UK.." AFAIK, ALL (UK/JAP) cycle up/down with A/C... it's SUPPOSED to to compensate for the drag on the engine...... [ and, ALL will make a fair 'clunk' that's just what A/C is like ] and the A/C comes on when you select the SCREEN (only) so as to automatically clear the screen (the OTHER use for A/C). 400BHP
Yeah, it does surge when the a/c compressor clutch engages and you are right about the extra strain, but when I push windscreen it does speed up the blower and change to auto, but it doesn't start the a/c up, on mine anyway. Nice avatar BTW!
Steve W
mmmmm........ perhaps it's only when cold ? (can't remember using SCREEN button when warmed up... have to try it ?) or, perhaps my controls are SPLIFFED ? ? Anyone elses go over to A/C when SCREEN is pushed ? ? ?
