Paul Laing
Anyone know what this is before i visit the garage? It's nothing bad and doesn't effect the car at all, it's just a slight rattle when you let off the accelerator pedal. Or when you rev it. The rattle isn't very bad, and is coming from under the exhaust heatshield, where the turbo's are. Anyone know what this is? When you shut the drivers door hard you can hear something loose. Probably the same thing. Anyone? Cheers, Paul
Matt Harwood
Unfortunatly, I don't know what it is, but I know of 4 other Supra's that have it, including mine. Let me know if you find the answer...
Wez
Had a similar issue on another car and turned out to be the heatshield on the CAT, was more like a buzzing sound that was only noticable in certain conditions. Although most supras don`t have CAT`s anymore so prob not that. :flame Dev
eyefi
exhaust contact with body (but thats to simple) or exhaust gas control valve.
Matt Harwood
If it's like mine and others I've heard, it seems to be coming from the very back of the engine. Definatly not exhaust contact. Sounds like a very thin piece of tin, (heatshield?), vibrating...
Paul Laing
yeah thats it Matt, when you put your windows up you can't hear it, and it's not bad it's just a slight rattle when you come off the revs.
eyefi
exhaust gas control valve, its ceramic and can "buzz". i think there is some adjustment in its closed position.
Paul Laing
Where abouts is that mate, under the manifold heatshield? Thats where the sounds coming from. Any pics of one or advice on how to fix it? Where can these be bought from, and are they pricey? Paul
AJI
I had a rattle on my previous car (not a Supra by the way) and it turned out to be a number of little stones that got caught between the CAT sheilding. It did very similar sounds as what you're describing.
eyefi
sorry, i didnt mean to sound so possitive in my previous post, im just making educated guesses. ive heard this valve "buzz" before on zero throttle. it could b anything really, so dodnt go out buying a new valve without getting it checked. location: stand at the drivers side wing, look under the first turbo (near front of engine). u'll see a big actuator linked to a rod that goes to the exhaust. the valve is on the end of that rod in the exhaust. be careful its hot down there
Matt Harwood
I don't think it's that. The noise sounds like it's coming from right at the back of the engine, near the bulkhead. - So much so, another guy thought it was flywheel related. (it's not BTW, as both of us have changed flywheels recently, and the rattle is still there)
Steve W2
Again not relational to a Supra but my old Rover used to make the same noise. Found out it was where the heatshield hat rusted and become brittle and cracked around one of the fixing screws. This caused the head shield to vibrtae when letting off the throttle and sometimes when held at a certain RPM. Could be that, problem is checking it. Bitch. Paul Laing
I thought it might be the Cat heatshield, but my Cats are both out. Could it still be that? It sounds like something is catching something, as when i shut my drivers door when the engines off i can hear the rattle. Matt, try shutting your door and see if yours still rattles. What, like when you rev your car you can hear the cat's vibrating in the bin back at home? Is that a bit like being able to feel an itch on your feet after you've had your leg amputated? Paul Laing
Yeah, or it could be a normal cat going through the bin bag! lol No someone told me it could be the heatshield even though iv'e taken the cats out!!! Thought it must be screwed onto the underside of the car or something like the rear one. Paul
Keith C
Yeah, got the same thing myself. *Exactly* the same as Matt describes. Obviously not a UK-only thing either as Matt has a J-Spec. I'd be *extremely* interested to know what it is. My cats are firmly in the garage.
