Alex
I've always wondered if they put something in the sand to make it more workable...anyone know? I know they need a certain type of sand, but to do stuff like those bones or the mane on the Lion, surely they need something more than water (ie wet sand) to make it stay together. Ark
There's a bloke in Weymouth with a permanent stand on the beach, making sand sculptures - awesome skill. Yes, they do need an additive to make the sand stick together for that long, but it isn't permanent, or even that strong. There's always some twat who throws a rock at it and ruins the sculpture for everyone - how dis-heartening for the artist.

Charlotte
Me and a friend were on holiday in Devon once, I must have been about 13. Anyway it was a caravan park and there was a beach nearby where they held daily competions for the children. So this particular day it was a sandcastle competion so my friend and i 'set up pitch'. We spent about 3 hours making this fantastic (we thought so) mermaid out of sand. There were people taking pictures, crowds forming (well one kid that tried to squash it). Anyway my friend went off to find the judge and she came back almost in tears. The competition had been judged two hours before! One and only time i tried my hand at sand art. ivan
That was an exhibition in Brighton I think. I remember seeing it on the box - they had to import special sand apparently. The council closed them down...
