i finally got my uk twin turbo yesterday. drove it home (150 miles)no probs, but went for drive this morning and noticed water dripping from front of engine. it was the bloody radiator leaking, have all tt radiators got brass end tanks? any suggestions where i can get recored or a new rad and any rough prices. may also consider uprated one.

apart from this problem im in love, i should have bought one sooner. the autobox is sooo smooth.

cheers ..lee

Lee,

Can't remember about the end tanks but...

I had to replace the rad on a GT-Four I had, now Toyota gave me two options.

1. Buy a new radiator (When I asked them how much it would be he simply replied "bend over trousers down")

2. Exchange your current one for a lot less money.

I went option 2.

If I were you in the same state though I would get a fluidyne one. Envy probably sell them.

Much better cooling and fit right into the stock position.

Hope that helps

i also initially thought air con too as it is also the first reply people get on the zx forum as well

it would make things easy for me if someone had a photo or a link to a photo of a uk spec rad. any pics appreciated even if its only the top in situ

cheers for all your replies ...lee

hi tim, yes mate they should be liable but all he said was send me a cheque for £65 and that will give you 3 months warranty then sort it out with them. that will take ages and i need to drive my car now.

would anyone reccomend putting liquid barseal in to act as a temporary fix untill i can find new rad

cheers ..lee

you should try waveing the old trading standards wand threat at the dealer. I know it won't help you now. But might get a better result. Plus you should name and shame, it wont help but it'll make you feel better.

Just take spare water everwhere with you, and look at the rad cap as Terry suggests my car did this when i first got it. The dealer over filled the water, so expansion tank full it dumped a little water out of the cap. I've never had any over heating, or further water loss.

I think the turbos are water cooled so it's quite important! and that barseal sh!t wont be good for them.

AFAIK, and I went into this in depth last year, no company in the UK can get or supply a suitably sized core to rebuild a leaking rad. To be honest fewer and fewer rad reconditioners are bothering to repair plastic end tanked rads any more as it's labour intensive with a high reject ratio when the crimped on tanks leak against the seals. I suggest you bite the bullet and buy a new rad from Toyota. I know people will find this contentious but I have reason to think some aftermarket ally rads are actually LESS efficient than the stock ones!

I don't doubt it, it's just I had a MKIV in the other week with an aftermarket ally rad, made up for the customer as a one off. His original rad was knackered, all the fins were falling off, and on a motorway run speeds over 90 would see the temp gauge rising inexorably. He thought BHG and all sorts of terrors, but it was just the state of the rad itself. He got someone in the rad game he knew to make something up and he was furious with me as the problem remained. I had a little bet with him that I'd fit a new Toyota rad, he didn't have to pay for it, and if it still overheated he could keep it, FOC. BUT, if it did fix it, he paid me for it, and the labour, and stand the beer at the weekend. He wavered, so I drank modestly :p

The ally rad was sent back, but it was a *iss poor thing, correct surface area, but a real cheap core with low tube and fin density, looked pretty, but wasn't up to the job at all.

Chris, that sounds about right. There are VERY few after market bits that are superior to OEM Toyota stuff for the Supra. Most are just shiny imitations. I wouldn't have uprated my radiator unless it had blown, and that wasn't Toyota's fault, but Kenlowe.

ive had a good look at my rad and it has been made custom and it is sh*te. the rad cap does not even fit properly and incapable of holding any pressure. ive just ordered a 2nd hand one from breakers £200. ive just spent all my money buying it otherwise id have had a upgrade.

an upgrade group buy for the zx was only £230. it was also a koyo. do you ever do these deals on this forum?

cheers ...lee

Hmmmm £200 for a 2nd hand rad. Seems a bit expensive to me seeing as suprastore are selling koyo rads for £260 less delivery and duty.

Maybe it's about right, but to be honest I would personally have paid the extra £100, or if you'd have called the good lads at envy they might have been able to do you a similar or better deal.

Anyway, whatever you end up with, I hope it cures your problem.

Best of luck
