Pixelfill
I didn't rate it that much either, but still had me jumping at points. I'm not a good horror viewer I jump like crazy. The Ring was particularly bad. Mike

RedM
Ju-on, the original Japanese version, was a much scarier film. I found the US remakes to be too bombastic, almost as if they felt the audience wouldn't be able to take the brooding nature of the original. Same with all remakes of Japanese horror films really. tbourner
Yeah definitely with the ones I've seen (ring and dark water) the J-horrors were MUCH scarier than the remakes. Haven't seen the US Grudge but the jap one was probably the scariest of the 3!
Ben-san
Saw the original Ju-on at a cinema in Japan when I was out there... after which I returned to my old-style accomodation (Ryokan, a la paper doors, tatami and matching scary bathroom), which didn't help. Kept feeding the TV with coins to keep me company - and I haven't been able to look at a duvet the same way again

Same with all remakes of Japanese horror films really. got to agree completely. the jspec grudge is the scariest thing i have seen, it has a "so matter of fact" feel. the scene with the girl who escapes to her apartment and finds sancuary in her bed is awesome, when she looks under the covers [shudder]. after watching it i ached from the tension. i don't think there is any music in the jspec grudge. Mike
I have to disagree I'm afraid... really enjoyed all the J-Spec 'Ring's.. but J-spec Grudge seemed like a bit of ring rip-off to me....? I haven't the remake yet..? I thought the remake of the the Ring was good? nothing like the j-spec, but still a good 'shocker' in it's own right... I find people tend to get a bit "well I loved their early work" about the whole j-spec horror thing.... it's nice imaginary, but nothing really new is it? RedM
Japanese horror is so effective because they make you think you are in a for a big scare and either keep you hanging for ages or don't make with the scares.

Have you seen "Don't look now"...? if not check it out... 1973, Nicolas Roeg film.. he was really into the experimental thing before he made this, ('Performance' with Mick Jagger and other curios)... so this ones a bit off kilter... similar stuff to the current crop of j-specs..
