How to get the right sales person?

I'm struggling to work out the best way of attracting good sales people to apply to us in Telford. We were thinking 20k basic with achievable and realistic 35-40K OTE. We're IT service and hardware suppliers.

Basically I need someone that'll just get out there and shout about how great we are and bring in lots of business. (Don't we all?)

Monster is ridiculously expensive.

Job centres don't bring in the right types.

Local paper has poor response.

Anyone got any tips on how to attract these people?

when i was looking for a job ill be honest what put me off is you need this this this and this. So i thought christ i dont have all those skills when realistically i did.

By sounds of it you want someone who is lively cant shut up and confident, i.e someone young who may not have all qualifications / experience you want. But with the Wage and incentives his enthusiasm will make up for lack of experience.

Put them on a 3month trial period to see how it goes.

Just an idea anyway

Steal / Headhunt from other companies that appear to be doing well, open yourself up for visits from the sort of people you want to employ, while they are with you trying to sell something it's then your job to sell the idea of working for you to them.

You may also find it of benefit to contact local recruitment agencies, not because you want them to find you people and then charge you a silly fee - just because the people working for them might relish a swap into a job like the one you have on offer, if not they may know someone who might (but will then probably want to handle it for a fee).

Advertise on here, you never know.....

If my experiences working with salespeople is anything to go by (5 years in technical pre-sales), start with people who aren't currently unemployed - salesman are usually unemployed for a reason!!!

Avoid ones who talk themselves up - they will probably interact with techies, so either get someone technical, or someone who is pleasant and above all, straight talking - if they don't know the answer, better they say so than make it up like the twats i had to work with...

...the number of times i had to explain to customers: "The product you just bought from us doesn't do what you want. No, it's never going to do that. The salesman told you what? Nonono, that's not what it's for..."

i have been in a sales environment for a few years now, from cars for Renault and Mercedes to Televisions for Comet and Currys.

i do not have any qualification, and i am not OVERLY technical. i am however polite, straight talking and steadfastly refuse to 'blag' like so many of my colluegues have done at so many different jobs now.

how much are you offering to relocate :D

Do you have a local recruitment agency?

I class them as akin to estate agents. Complete sharks.

Nice thinking!

Plus - you can see if they're any good first hand ;)

Yes. This is a worry indeed. Many of our customers are quite savy and I wouldn't want them thinking they know more than the sales bod. Mind you, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, so maybe I'd prefer them to know very little and let the tech guys spec the jobs after the initial foot in the door.

Yes. Blaggers will get caught out eventually.

I'll write up a job description and see how you guys like that as well.

Thanks very much for your input everyone. It's good to have an external perspective and has got me thinking a few different things.

Now why would I want to do something stupid like that?

Telford's like a magnet, once you go there you can't escape...

That might explain why I'm up there at least twice a week from Cheltenham...

Or, it could be this fit chick I know there... ;)
