AJI
suppose it depends what you're going to be using it for? if its towing or for off road then LandRovers are good along with the Landcruiser etc. (The Landy Discovery that my dad used to have was great off road... even with road tyres on it). If its just because its winter time and you want 4 wheel drive for extra traction then a Celica GT4 would be handy.
Jake
Be careful with those import cars Simon. They're impossible to insure and get parts for, you know. What do you want a 4wd for anyway? Considered an X5? I would prefer the beemer to any you have listed

What do you want a 4wd for anyway? In order to cope with the difficult terrain between my house and the local filling station Jake:p Well I need square cubic load space and four seats, and the ability to drive on fields and beaches...something with some grunt too I would agree on the X5..but its out of my price range...are you serious about the parts situation!!!?....how about the 3.4 litre block Landcruiser..are they difficult to source parts for? John_M
I had a Ford Explorer for three years, never had any trouble and loved it. The only quirk was that the local dealer couldn't deal with it as their ramp wasn't rated high enough so had to go to the commercial dealer but that was just round the corner from work so wasn't an issue. Loads of aftermarket stuff available from USA on the internet. V reg 2000 models are going for around the £7k mark

nickyboy
The Shoguns are nice - we drove across Arizona in one. What about a Jeep Cherokee - they're pretty reasonable 2nd hand?
Green Peace
What about a Jeep Cherokee - they're pretty reasonable 2nd hand? Thanks Nick I took a Cherokee for a test drive in 95...it had a big slab of teak as the dashboard...I felt like Kris Kristoffesen in the 'Convoy' movie:haha: I only had it in my posession for an hour...was ok 4.0L.....i just got pissed off by the patronising sales techniques of Jeep...'When you see the Jeep logo, you know you are buying qaulity' he said with a really fat greedy smile! When a salesman you have never met before says something like that to you...you know hes talking bollox...THATS IMPULSE:nyah: Vanessa you have sold it to me:clap: ...just gotta find one though;)
lambertpig
dont know how old you want to go but the nissan 4.2 deisels are the ultimate tonka toys they even do a turbo 4.2 deisel which is a touque monster the whole pacage is stronger built than landcruiser/shogun if a bit less refined.good for the united nations.new models are 2.8 deisels and 3.0 deisels first lacks touque for such a big truck and i believe the 3.0 has know head gasket probs. go for the 4.2 turbo and start rampaging
