The two diagnostics connections?

Hi people,

Ever since I bought my Supra I have been wondering what those two 'diagnostics' boxes do? One of them is in the engine bay and the other in under the steering wheel.

Are they both the same connection and are they useful to the driver in any way or is it just some thing that the garages plug in when they do engine checks?

Thanx for any replies.

Is it something I can check myself? If I bought a laptop could I connect and see if there is anything wrong? (not that there is anything wrong with my car at the moment).

also

Is it true that you can check what the max speed the vehicle has been taken to, and also the max revs or is that just a load of $hite?

No you do not need a laptop. You just need to connect E1 to TE1.

Turn on the ignition and count and  record the  number  of  blinks made by the the "little engine " symbol. 7 regular blinks mean no fault recorded. Toyota sell a SST 09843-18020 but  a piece of wire does the same job.

Pulling NO1 EFI fuse will rest the ECU and empty it of codes. The only  faults picked up will be from when the  car is first started after the  fuse is replaced.

As far as I know the  unit only reports fault codes.
