How to respray ?

Well, we'd like to spray the camper :-).

I've got a compressor and a spray gun that i bouht from a boot sale, although never used it.

Being that i've never used one, or resprayed anything, i'm kind of looking forward to experimenting..

I thought you'd do this?

1, Remove handels/windows etc...

2, Sand down,

3, Wash + Prime,

4, Get some paint from halfords? Put in spray gun, and spray lots?

Not sure what colour would look best?

Halfrauds only sell paint in an aerosol can, you'll need to find an industry supplyer. Brave task if you've not painted before.

What condition is the existing paint work? If it's sound, you may get away with a light coat of cellulose primer after wet flating [sanding] with 800grit and then top coat. You'll need Panel Clean or Degreaser before applying paint to remove silicone and grease.

I've got an old supra bonnet you can practise on if you want it.

very very breifly :- sand down with 600/800 grit, prime, leave to dry a couple of days, sand again, to find any low spots that have not been touched by sanding filler, prime again, leave again, topcoat, clearcoat if required, sand with 1200/1500, buff, smile.

you need to mix your paint with thinners your supplier will give you a spec sheet of ratio and drying times if you ask

its your choice how much you miss out and what finish you require, allready missed a few steps out though.

hope this helps a bit

I'm sure it will look just fine

I've re-sprayed the front of my vectra before when i decided to hit a tree... It was only a patch about the size of a football, but you couldn't notice it at all once it was done.. That was done using a good old spray can from halfords :-)

Well, heres the first picture of the camper :yu: I had a quick clear out inside it last night and found loads of electrical/gas/pipes/hoses that i have no idea what they do! I also found spare, brake pads, oil filter, fuel filter, brakes.. And a tow rope :-)

take it this is your job but why take the piss out of someone who wants to have a go himself ?

no its not my job. i just think its a very big task to spray a car without having any experence . first of all anyone can pick up a spray gun and spray  its all in the prep work were it matters. its all ok to just say yeah yeah have ago but without the right knowledge/experence it will not look right and then it could cost double to have it put right again. just looking at the whole picture mate:blahblah:

I think your getting the wrong picture...

I'm going to be spraying it then covering it in vinyl and taking to le mans with the lads...

Cut the top off, and turn it into a large BBQ....

only kidding...

It doesn't really matter if it comes out looking bad, what matters is that i made an attempt to do something that i wouldn't normally do and hopefully i'll enjoy spending time doing it. And secondily, hopefully, will look good.. If it looks bad, well hey, nothing lost... Its already hand painted..

  • 7 months later...

lol...Where you guys been :-)...

Yes, all sanded down and primed and resprayed in black... Didn't look too bad all in all, all though we sold it last week for £600 :-). All done in the rear of the garden, outside.. It even rained on one occasion just after which was a bugger :-)

Here are some before/during/after pictures...

It didn't look all that bad... I just couldn't beleive how sticky the paint was... First day i did it i didn't wear gloves and i had black paint all over my hands and face and that took weeks to get off!

only make that mistake once..

All in all i was quite happy bearing in mind i've never done anything like that in my life :-)
