Guest jaima
Hi all, i got my 93 J-spec n/a a couple of weeks ago, i went to collect my daughter from school today and it was difficult to select reverse gear, i had to apply a fair bit of pressure to get it into gear, it didnt want to go into reverse (the clutch was renewed on dec 2003 a cost of £517 by the previous owner) the same thing happened again about 10 mins later once i got home and swithed off the engine and fired it up again, does anyone have any suggestions as to what the cause might be ??? Tks guys Jaima.
toyotasuprauk
Mine does this sometimes. I bring the clutch up and push it back down again and its normally fine, if not I put into first then reverse. Sounds silly but your mat isn't under the clutch pedal is it? Guest jaima
Hi, no the mat isnt ! although the clutch pedal compared to other cars that ive had is heavy !. Also all gears (the only way i can describe it) do take a bit of pressure when selecting, again compared to other cars in the past ie fords bmw ect but today is the first that this has happened with the reverse gear. Nic
Sounds like it could be the clutch on it's way out. Try accelerating in a high gear from low rpms, if the clutch is worn, then you'll hear the engine rev faster than you accelerate. If it does slip, get it changed ASAP as driving it when it is slipping will cause a lot of heat build up.

Chris Wilson
Sounds like clutch drag, (the clutch plate is still in contact with the flywheel, even with the pedal fully depressed. remove all mats et cetera from under the pedal, see if it helps. It *MAY* be posible to fix it without a new clutch, it may not...

Thank you Jaima 2 years for a clutch can be quite normal on a Supra, especially if the power has been raised. I'm lucky if I get 20K km from mine, but mine is all urban driving so the clutch gets used a hell of a lot.

Nic m8 it must cost you an absolute fortune in clutches, i would be looking to get @ least 3 yrs driving from a new one but in saying that, my cousin has a 2 yr old mini and his clutch is on its way out. Yes and that's with a twin plate TRD clutch, with a stock clutch I only got about 12K km. Driving in HK involves a LOT of gear changing and stop/starting urban driving, so mine is an extreme example. Saying that I have owned my car 8 years and only done just over 48K km, which is driving my car most days, as HK is not a big place so difficult to rack up big miles. If I was doing daily driving in the UK though, I wouldn't be suprised if a clutch only lasted a couple of years, especially at BPU levels or above.
