Second turbo problem - hoses

Hi there

I've noticed a second turbo problem on my UK TT6 for the last few weeks. At times the second turbo will really kick and at other times it really struggles for power and doesn't give a smooth delivery at all. I've noticed that it's usually cold when the second turbo works properly, often when the car hasn't been running for too long (of course I always let it warm up first though!). I'm beginnig to suspect this is a hose problem - since the car has 100k on the clock it's probably worth replacing the hoses that are prone to break anyway, even if they're not the cause of the problem.. Are they difficult to replace and where can I get them from - and for how much? Anyone have any part numbers?

Many thanks!

Francis

I would replace the hoses first, I got mine from miami gt a while back the make is hose techniques but I think envy supply ready cut hoses which obviosuly makes things a lot easier! the old hoses are a pain to take off but it is worth it, I had the same situation as you and it turned out to be a vsv, ahve you got a boost gauge fitted and any mods to the car?

I think my set was around £90, I think envy's are cheaper, but with my set you get a lot of extra hose which is nice! (you may do with envy's too?)

I would replace all the hoses that are to do with the seq system, this would be each hose to each actuator and vsv, this actaully isn't that many hoses, of the top of my head maybe around 10 or so, some are quite fiddly!

A boost gauge would really help this issue but I would recommend you try this 5 min TTC mod as this bypasses the vsv's which means if it runs fine in this way then it means that one of the 2 vsv's it bypasses is playing silly buggers!, now this guide says it for J-specs but I beleive it would be the same for a UK;

You making sure u use high octance fuel? TBH i often wondered if my car was underperforming. I would suggest a boost gauge then you will know for sure before changing loads of stuff. Good luck with it mate and get those cats out and go BPU its WELL worth it!

Yep Tesco 99 RON. There's obvioiously something wrong with the second turbo, at times it feels smooth but not too fast, other times it stutters for power, and at other times (always when it's cold and the car's not been running too long) it's more like "f**k me this is fast!". Will definitely consider the decat, have you noticed any blue smoke since you did it? That's the only thing I'm worried about..

Would be very interested in some black standard looking ones if you've got any? On that topic, I forgot i was provided with some hoses by the previous owner (photo attached). Are these for the turbo or for something else?

Cheers,

Francis

No blue smoke. I was getting a fair bit of WHITE smoke (not condensation) on start but getting rid of the cats has sorted that.

The power increase was amazing mate. If your going to do it get you Fuel Cut Defencer on at the same time, u could possibly get a speed delimiter in the same thing.

You dont need to worry about a fuel pump or blow off valve being uk.

All you need to do it decat, boost gauge, FCD and SDL and colder grade plugs. Turns the car into a whole different animal so be careful

Let me know if you do go ahead, we will need to get me, you and cornelious on a drag at the next bovingdon type event.

Good comparison of BPU cars

I really think your problem will be a vsv, there's a good write up in the FAQ section and I'd put money in the IACV vsv that's playing up, I've typed this out for a few people now, when you get a chance locate the iacv vsv and actuator then use the throttle in the engine bay and raise the revs quickly to around 3k, if the iacv vsv worksd the actuactor rod will move up and down, if it sometimes goes up and other times it doesn't then this will be where the problem is, I changed mine over after this with a newer one and it would then move up and down at the same revs each time!

give it a go!
