Auto - 6 speed conversion

Hello all,

I'm wondering if someone could help me....

I've recently purchased a '93 Jap spec GZ Auto and after a few months of driving have decided that I really should have waited the extra months and saved up for the 6 speed. Not that the auto is bad, I would just prefer a 6 speed. I've read that chaps over in the states, have converted the auto to 6 speed with considerable success, and I'm thinking about doing the same. (Especially as the cheapest 6 speed I've seen is going for 6 grand more than I paid for my auto)

I have a couple of questions that I would like to ask the forum first, as if anybody is going to know I guess it's you guys. :)

1. Has anybody in the UK done the conversion?

2. Does anybody know of a supra being broken as a possible donor car? or altnernatively any companies that could supply a getrag V160/V161?

3. What, other than the ratios is the difference between the V160 and the V161? Would either fit my early '93 Jap TT?

I'm also happy to receive any advice other than the old "Why don't you just buy a 6 speed to start with" kind of advice. The answer is I simply can't afford and am looking for a project. So there:p

Anyway hope that somebody out there can help and hopefully in the future I'll be able to repay the favour.

Many thanks

Hi, welcome to the boards :)

This topic has been discussed before.. and the general consensus is that it'll work out far cheaper and easier to just get a manul Supra. The cost for conversion runs into the thousands and theres a lot of effort involved.

I'm sure you could find many J-spec manuals popping up and the occasional UK one... and the price difference shouldnt be that great.

Hopefully someone will come along with more accurate figures, but I beleive no one will suggest doing the swap is advised :)

Thanks for the replies to date guys,

£2750... Well no I didn't but then after searching for the last 5 months on the auto trader and just about every importer that I can find on the web, the best price/quality combo 6 speed I've found was around £13K, if memory serves me right so I bought an auto with a convesion in mind. Anyway I've just had a look at the car you mentioned, 105,000 miles... hmmmm. I may not know too much about the supra's reliability but every other toyota I've had has needed to have engine work done whilst in stock form at 120,000.

As for doing the work myself. Well yes that was the plan. I have unlimited access to a workshop and any tools I could possibly need.

What I don't have is acess to information about the gearbox types and where I can possibly get one. So any help on that front would be greatly recieved.

Thanks again in advance,

Hello and welcome.

I have seen your email on the MKIV list and noticed that you have already seen Mohd's pages about this conversion.

As everybody has pointed out it really is very costly and not something to do half heartedly. I guess that working for Jordan then you have enough resources to call on if things get a little sticky.

To answer some of your questions :-

1. I think Ibrar was going to attempt this conversion, not sure how he got on. Drop him a PM.

2. A donor car is by far the best solution as there are just so many other small parts that are needed. If you could buy a whole (accident damaged) vehicle then you may be able to make a fair proportion of the money back by selling off other parts. Every so often a Getrag box will come up for sale, you just need to keep your ear to the ground.

3. The V160 is the TT version of the gearbox and the V161 is the later NA version of the box. In theory they should be the same box just with different ratio's.

Don't forget you will really need the diff and driveshafts (well only one driveshaft actually) from a manual car as well to get the gearing correct.

Also as per Mohd's article the floorpan needs to be altered as the Getrag box is a little larger than the auto.

Good Luck

I guess you're going to have to ring round the breakers and find the bits you need. You'll need the gearbox, pedal box, and ECU from a manual car (make sure it's not from a post 97 car as they use a different ECU). Also the interior parts and the new dashboard layout without the gear selection thingy on it. Do auto and manual cars use the same diff ratio? I think you may need a diff as well. Plus bellhousing/flywheel/clutch assy. Not sure if your driveshaft will bolt straight up to the new box or not.

I think there are a couple of websites where you type in what you need, loads of breakers get an email, and they can then phone you up if they have what you're after.
