Jake
I wouldn't bother Bry. I bought one but getting the recorded video off the cam and onto a PC is such a pain in the arse that I never bother.

I use firewire with mine and its just plug and play, its so easy to do.
jim_supra
Have just got myself a digital camcorder for my hols, it's a JVC GZ-MC100. That has a usb port on it so it's very quick to get stuff onto the pc.
Jake
yeah mine has Firewire but it takes an hour to transfer an hour of video from the cam onto the PC before you can then start editing it and/or converting it to DVD. I can't be waiting that long. I want to be able to transer that amount of data in a few mins, like you can between PCs or between any other modern mass storage device. Bobbeh
Have you got a decent pc? Thats usually a big factor when editing video.
Jake
It was decent spec when I got it in 2003 XP2500+, 1Gig of RAM, Decent 256MB GFX Card, 400GB HDD, DVD writer, etc etc. But it's not the editing I have an issue with, it's the transfer rate from cam to PC, seems like the 1:1 playback rate of the cam is the problem. Aren't they all like that ?
Marco
Why dont you get a camcorder that records straight to DVD than?
Angie
I bought Brian a JVC digital video camera on ebay last year for £86!! OK, it was used, but it was a right bargain!
Jake
Why dont you get a camcorder that records straight to DVD than? Would that be quicker to get the video off the cam then? Can it transfer 1 hour of video to DVD in a few mins?

Jake
Do you want blood as well Its not going to ever be a few minutes Sure it will. Why not? It might be a restriction of digital tape at the moment but the tech exists now to do it right. It doesn't take an hour to copy an hour of video to DVD from your PC does it? It doesn't take 40mins to burn a music CD. So why does a 'digital' camcorder take 1min to transfer 1min of digital data? The current cam technology sucks - big time. The current cam technology sucks - big time. Well it will one day of course. But cant see it happening for a couple years. Theres just not enough demand for it yet. Its got to be the camcorder data speeds thats the let down as either USB 2 or firewire can transfer at 400mb per min (god i think it per min, brain break down!!) Im surprised you didnt buy one of those DVD camcorders that records straight onto a DVD-RW. not sure on price of these though. Im sure everything will be on Flash memory soon enough like memory cards. No moving parts and fast speeds as well and will be a simple case of taking your 10Gb memory card and putting it in slot on your PC. Ive got a 1Gb memory card i know you can get an 8Gb memory card at a cool $800 Ive never understood why they cant just all adopt something like that which will plug from one thing to the next!! Jake
Im surprised you didnt buy one of those DVD camcorders that records straight onto a DVD-RW. That must be what Marco was talking about. I didn't know such a thing existed. TBH I gave up on camcorders in disgust when I found out how crap they actually were (this was in late 2003, I bought one for the mkivsupra.net convoy (read 'race') to Amsterdam. I never did get the 4½ hours of video off tape. Sounds like these DVD Cams might be a reasonable compromise though - if they work properly.
