new free stuff

OK, I have leeched from this forum many times and thought that as a company we could put something back into it.

I have a few ideas which I have put into a poll and I wondered if people could vote on the stuff being offered (importance wise) in addition to some of the free stuff we already offer. Where anything i not free I have put a * next to it.

The current list is :

url redirects ( yourname/car/username/anything.uksupra.com )

uksupra.com pop3/imap email accounts

supra blogs for all members (ideal for the step by step progress of improving your cars)

member reduced hosting costs with free upgrades & software*

Something else (please specify)

May look at more options if you have anything to suggest that may be currently lacking. We do have a supra-specific 'rate my car site' under development which is free and a few other projects kept under wraps as well so keep your eyes peeled for those.

I was thinking about a proper multimedia section. Something like Coppermine maybe?

Also to support videos. We've all got some great footage but it could all do with being centralised and catalogued properly rather than stuck in a thread to go stale. Group by events etc.

If you can't do petrol I'll settle for beer.

Vote for other and I'll count that as one vote for a multimedia site of some description. We already have a coppermine-esque photo site but I can look to expand that.

If I end up with your car then you will have plenty of beers on me :) lol

That's cool, any more options from anybody? Not a lot of votes so far which would lead me to believe that people don't really want new/free/reduced stuff

That's blinding lol, I'll charge the same, make no free stuff and sit on my arse all week getting paid work done instead :D

If more people could vote it would be good so I can get a more defined cross-section of site users, poke your friends with a stick and get them to vote!

Don't suppose you offer unix shell accounts?

It's something we can offer, generally choos not to though, there are companies offering only this service and they tend to have better experience from a monitoring point of view. The implications relating to netblock banning from IRC bots using shell accounts could implicate and affect our customers so we choose to only allow shell accounts to trusted and knowledgable clients. If you would like me to supply a list of shell account suppliers for particular purposes please let me know. It may be financially better to just set up a freebsd install in a virtual machine (vpc) and run your own accounts.

Let me know if you need any further help

Hi,

I voted for the multimedia hosting.

Umm, showing my ignorance but can you explain the url redirect option? What's it do? What are the advantages?

Thanks.

A lot of people use free (and paid hosting) the primary benefit is for people hosted on free accounts like geocities. The url redirect basically means that to irect people to your site, instead of having (e.g.) http://www.uk.geocities.com/myusername/mysite/mypage.html

you can instead use heyrick.uksupra.com

Any users typing that url will be sent directly to your geocities site.

The benefit to everybody is that we can all have a common domain space to use for our supra sites, keeping them all under one domain but hosted anywhere and everywhere in the world on both free and paid hosting accounts.

I hope I have explained it well enough, let me know if you need more info.

I'd like some way of allowing forum users to access a folder on my pc so I can share pics an vids with them. Something thats not complicated to use.

If you have a requirement that they be stored on your pc long-term then there are a number of things you would need:

static Ip or dynamic DNS resolver software

shared folder on your machine with orrect access rights

PC left on 24/7/365

If you mean that you wish to transfer media from your pc somewhere else so that anybody can access it then this has been mentioned above and I am looking into a way for us to do that. The problem is one of bandwidth and costs associated with it. Although, I just had the thought that by using the url redirection above, there is nothing stopping us being able to access multimedia wherever it is stored using a single domain with multiple subdomains and an index page listed all the multimedia at least as a temporary solution until I can find a way to offset the bandwidth costs??

OK that makes no sense whatsoever to me lol :) you lost me at the url redirection lol. Basically I don't want to place stuff on a server or what have you as I am aware that it costs money to do that. I'd like a facility that allows me to share a folder with other forum users when I am online AKA kazaa style and put all my photo's and stuff like that in it. It would also be ideal for sharing larger files with people like video files. I think what i mean is a forum members only kazaa really.

I think we need a Supra modification design tool. You know the sort of thing, it displays a standard Supra in 3D and you can change the colours, wheels, add modifications etc etc and get to see what it would look like. I'd like it to go into massive details not seen before on the internet. So you could get a view from the drivers seat and change the dash colour, type of dials, add a pillar pod to the door and more.

Once you've done that ( :p ) you could modify it slightly to use it as a parts lookup. Where you can zoom in on the car and retrieve details about the parts available, who from etc etc.

It you pull that off I'll be well impressed! :)

And for the weekend, you could create a mapping tool of some kind that could be used for lots of stuff including finding your nearest (club recommended!) trader, mot station, club events and national events etc etc.

Chop chop, stop reading this post and get to work.

lol, I'm actually coding the free subdomain software at the moment, should be dine in the next couple of hours.

I see no reason not to use googlemaps api to create a local trader hack that would work?!? it's not something I have looked at before but shouldn't be too hard.

In terms of a parts reference, buy the EPC lol

It would be cool to be able to look at the supe with different parts on, I just used need for speed underground lol, I think that to do that for free would be an immense task but achievable. Not something I would elect to do, more something I would make a large tuning company pay an obsene amount of money for, all that CAD and reference work would take months if not more.

Good ideas though

I was thinking along those lines...

That was exactly what I was thinking of when I posted it!

I know the latter would be silly amounts of work so I'm not surprised you don't want to do it, but if the map one could be done and be bolted into the forum somehow then I think it will be beneficial and I know members have asked for something similar before.

Ta for the advice. It's quite hard to find decent providers, and I've been lucky to find a one via my old uni. They are a little amateurish though. It doesn't seem possible to find a reliable, well managed service without paying a lot of money (I know you get what you pay for!)

I do have my own machines, but really can't be arsed with all the setup and management. I really just want mutt for my emails :)
