How To Fit LS400 Callipers

Tools required:

Wrench and sockets. Sizes: 17mm, 14mm

Spanner 14mm, 10mm

Brake line clamps

File

Tin snips or grinder

 

1. First off nice and simple, remove the wheel:

2. Next up is to remove the 2 x 17mm bolts from the back of the old calliper. I found it easier to turn the wheel to get a better angle and more leverage. Mine were fairly tight and needed some force to start them moving:

3. With the calliper out the way you can now remove the old brake disc. This will reveal the dust shield:

4. Now the choice is yours. The new discs are to big for the shields. You can try and remove the dust shield; I believe some have fitted UK spec ones in place. Or as I have you can cut them down to size and bend them a little to kind of work. I used a set of tin snips for this or you could use a grinder if your careful with what’s behind:

5. Next up is to get your LS400 calliper. On the back you will need to file off a very small amount of metal. This has no impact to the structure of the calliper. This took me less than a minute of filing:

6. I tested the fitment of the calliper to make sure I’d filed enough, and that it would bolt on ok. You will need LS400 calliper bolts as they are shorter:

7. I then cleaned and fitted the brake discs and bolted the calliper on properly:

8. Next up I clamped the brake line as close to the old calliper as I could. I undid the 14mm bolt holding the line to the calliper. I lost a tiny amount of fluid:

9. I then bolted the line to the back of the LS400 calliper (don't forget the copper washer):

10. With that done it was time to bleed the calliper. Remove the rubber cover and undo the 10mm bleed screw on the back:

11. I used a self-bleeding kit which attached to the bleed screw:

12. Several pumps on the brake pedal until the fluid had no bubbles in it, I then tightened the bleed screw:

13. Replace the rubber cover:

14. Check everything is tight, no leaks, then refit the wheel:

15. Into the engine bay, top up the brake fluid as required:

16. Time for a slow test drive to make sure everything works. Back home, check for leaks and you are sorted! :D

 

Hopefully this will help someone. I know it's a basic guide. Was a fairly easy job, I recon about an hour each side.

 

Have to say I was shocked in how much lighter the LS400 callipers are compared to the Supra ones. Can’t wait to get out on the road and see how they perform!
