Let bat = x Let ball = y x + y = 1.2 // Because bat plus ball is £1.20 y + 1 = x // Because bat costs £1 more than ball Substituting x for (y+1)... 2y + 1 = 1.2 Therefore, 2y = 0.2 So y = 0.1 // Ball is 10p Substituting back in... x = 0.1 + 1 // Bat is £1.10 I can't believe I bothered to post this! I need to get out more. Still, I'm a big believer in methodology, cause it helps when the numbers get more complicated... In school, I used to work out the solution with the minimalistic explaination, teachers used to ask me why, and I'd go, well, youre the smart one - work it out....
