IMO. Mine was off when the seal failed the second time as I just removed the pump complete with seal, and the spring was floating about when I dismantled the pump, I think the pressure forces the seal lips outward and dislodges the spring. Although unlikely, it could block the drain and compound the original problem, but if the oil pump is worn and leaking it will not prevent the seal from being displaced.
