Cutting the filler panel under the stock airbox

Those that have done it before.

Can you tell me what you used? Circular cutter? Drilled a start point a used tin snips from there? (don't know how thick it is) Angle grinder? Hacksaw?

I'd like a fairly neat circle but I think I want it bigger than any circular cutter I own...or should I just do multiple smaller holes?

TIA

I bought a 6 1/2" hole saw. They're not cheap though. I think it was about £40 ish.

You also need a good drill. The surface is uneven and a lot of battery drills get snagged up as Dude found out ;)

You also need to be careful as some wiring is clipped up just underneath the panel you'll be cutting into.

Alex... dont use Machinemart.... they're very expensive.... use ITS (Industrial Tool Supply) in Leyton, London, they do a hooge hole saw 170mm or something like that for about 25 quid if I remember correctly - a veritable bargain. I have been planning to do just this (I am assuming a cold air intake, yes?) on my car but havent got round to buying or doing it yet. I would have posted you the hole saw ifI had it so you could borrow ;)

cheers

James

I'm not sure if I'm going for solid pipe or a flexi pipe yet...it may well be that the parts used look (*read ARE*) like guttering bits. as that is big bore and comes in lots of helpful shapes....i'd like to get some sort of funnel covering the whole duct and ramming air up the pipe....but if I go too OTT I expect issue's with air pressure under the bonnet.

Alex,

I have cut quite a few holes in various cars and have a range of saws. The last two we cut were on my sons conversion. I have found that steel lined plastic covered door or window edge seals from a breakers make a perfect wrap around cover for the edges of the holes. The spring "teeth" give excellent grip on the hole keeping the seal perfectly circular. The car is in the paint shop so I cant take a pic to illustrate what I mean.

cheers Termi...I think I know what you mean but a pic to confirm would be handy...think you mean the rubber strip at the bottom of the window that stops rain getting inside the door?

Peter, I may well drop you a PM...I'll measure up this weekend...I'm also debating relocating the filter to the SMIC position...

Whoa there...this is not me trying to extract more power but to fix my problem with my VVTi throttle...

Ewen has found his was fixed by using the stock airbox. I don't have that luxury so I'm trying to cool my charge temperatures via other means.

I am not going to say yeah do it to your car too...

fair enough Alex.

it was only a passing thought to be honest anyway, im not sure i have the patience to prolong my rebuild by moving an air filter!

alex, i didn't bother cutting that panel at all, i just put a triangular scoop at the gap that is behind/underneath the light. this brings in plenty of ambient air. my filter is also sealed at the rear and sides and i have no indicators, which helps. intake temps are great.

for anyone thinking of sticking the filter down through that panel and into the smic position i dont think that's a good idea, it's prone to water damage (paper filters), extra dust and it's a low pressure area.

I think B'have has done this, but he has the luxury of owning two supras, and I think that he has done it to his trackday beast, so I bet it only sees nice weather!

I've got a Whifbitz bumper that might not duct things as expected or give me the room to use the under light option...

I need to jack the car up and give it a going over in this area....Heat shielding and investigation of ducting options will be tomorrow's tasks.
