how do you wind brake pistons back?

just changing the pads on my sons car the caliper pistons wind back but how do you get them far enough back to get the old pads out?

What car is it for a start. Are they press backs or wind backs?

As geo has shown you in the link, a simple tool to do the job, if they are push backs simply leave the old pads in and lever them back, this way you are not damaging the surface of the disk.

small block of wood and a g-clamp works also

If it's rears, there is a chance you need to push them back and screw in at the same time, g-clamp is best for that kind of job

My old vti prelude had wind-in rear caliper pistons, i just gpot an old flathead screwdriver and ground it down to fit the slot then used it to wind the piston. A proper block for doing it would be better but when your sitting in your drive with the wheel off.....
