In Case of Emergency

A mate sent me this. Sounds like a sensible plan to me.

Following the disaster in London . . .

East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency ( ICE ) " campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word " ICE " in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency".

In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do.

Please will you also email this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest.

For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

Good idea, don't know whether the network providers could do that or if it would have to be actually programmed into each phone's CPU - not much good unless everyone buys a new phone. Worth hassling them about methinks.

But the idea is so simple that people don't need new phones or anything?? The point is, is that you just put say.. your wife;s number in your phone under ICE, that was if you have an accident, they can search your phone book and know who to contact... nothing more complicated than that? I've done it already!

Ah I see... that would prove difficult. Ooo I know, there is a message that comes up on your phone when it starts up, one that you can change, before it even asks for the password or code, you could put your ICE number there if your phone is locked??? Then you just need to turn it off and on... which can be done can't it? When it's locked I mean. I think mine does.

Some people really do need to get a life...

Email hoaxers are threatening a campaign to encourage people to store contact details in their mobile phones.

The ICE (In Case of Emergency) scheme gained widespread coverage in the wake of Thursday’s London bombings as word spread by email throughout the world.

People can add into the mobile’s address book ICE and the name and number of the person they would like contacted in an emergency.

But a subsequent email circulated by malicious hoaxers suggests that ICE is a type of mobile phone virus which accesses your address book and drains pay-as-you-go phones of its credits.

Matt Ware, spokesman for the East Anglian Ambulance Service, asked people to ignore the hoax email.

“I have been inundated with emails and phone calls from people worried that, having put ICE into their mobiles, they are now going to be charged for the privilege,” he added.

“We would like to assure people that that’s not the case. Whoever began this second email chain is obviously a malicious person with way too much time on their hands.”

Details of ICE can be found at http://www.icecontact.com

not wishing to sound daft, but how?!

Because you never know when you're about to get struck down, and if no-one is around who knows you well enough, it could help the emergency services with regard to certain conditions. Diabetes, allergies to penicillin etc...

Ruddy Nora, there's always one. I don't know, I just pasted the e-mail I got in it's entirety.

How about - You could have allergies to stuff that your ICE contact knows about and you're daft enough to not carry a Medic Alert thing.

You have no need to worry about that-I've already put my mobile number under ICE in his phone and his mobile number under ICE on my phone. Only problem I have is that I have an accident he won't answer the phone, and if they leave a message he won't call them back! :D
