Dragonball
Friend of mine just got caught by the jokers at a particular delivery company (I believe with the same initials as a well know explosive compound!) Just a quick pointer for anyone taking in stuff - from wherever and whenever (not just car stuff) Always indicate that you have recieved the delivery UNCHECKED (actually write this on the form or electronic signature box) Just that once signed for you have agreed by default that they (the delivery company) have delivered it in good condition and you subsequently loose the right to compensation if, once you open it, you find it has been damaged in transit!! If you see any marks AT ALL on the box - actually sign for it as DAMAGED - just in case

Gaz Walker
Paul, Great subject. Not being funny but the "unchecked" has no legal bearing whatsoever. It actually says this in the Terms and Conditions (of our courier anyway). We've signed unchecked for things for over 2 years - its cost us thousands of pounds still. Now, we check the box outside, if theres cuts, dints, holes or footprints (I'm not kidding) we sign for as damaged. If you do sign for good in your own name or unchecked check them as soon as possible (within the hour). If you do not notify the courier the same day, you have no entitlement whatsoever to insurance/compensation - another clause. Gaz.
Pete
In the IT industry we get loads of people trying it on. Basically keep a digital camera (or video) of parcels you're opening to prove how it arrived if you're unsure. Only use insured carriers. Always sign for the correct number of parcels (if one of our guys miss counts again I'll scream)
JohnA
It is important to write 'damaged' next to your signature if there is any evidence of mistreatment. Same as when you place a future order and you have to prepay --- always write in that the delivery date is 'of the essence'. That makes it part of the contract, and if they want to play the 'waiting' game you can demand full and unconditional refund. Otherwise it's iffy (courts have to decide what is 'reasonable' time etc...) Me paranoid? Naaaahh.....
martynb
We are always getting trouble with this and returning goods to our suppliers. It reached a peak when the suppliers refused to accept a return because the goods were inadequately packed - just the point we were making to them as the goods were sent back exactly as received. We ALWAYS take pics of damaged goods in the packaging etc as soon as damage is discovered - well worth it when the arguing starts.
Mike B
We always sign everything at work damaged regardless. Carriers don't care and we are covered if we need to make a claim later.
Digsy
My plasma screen came in a box labelled "lift with two people". It measured nearly a meter and a half long by about a meter high, and weighed about 12 kilos. CityLink sent a guy out on his own to deliver it. Thank God I was there at the time! I signed that as "unchecked". Thankfully, all was OK.
