5th and 6th gear gone AWOL

Hi guys, more gear issues from TAZ. . . :drown:

Last night I got stuck in 5th gear, ground to halt on a particulary steep hill so called AA out. Before they arrived I was trying to select 1st and 2nd to pull away and the car just seemed stuck in 5th all the time.

Some 10 mins later I tried again (after switching off the engine, pondering and using some spirited gear changing a few times). This time 1st was working so I took advantage and pulled away. Gears 2nd, 3rd and 4th all worked fine.

Unfortunally the gear I had been stuck in now became the gear I could not get. Both 5th and 6th were smooth and when engaged just allowed me to rev as though the gear gate was fine but the gears were missing (or in neutral) . . . but I managed to get home.

Summary - no 5th and 6th gear.

Now Matt mentioned this some moons ago and suggested the selector bushes might be a problem.

I also note:

(a) 5th/6th gear uses same selector.

(b) It was hard coming out of AND is now impossible to get into the same gears (5th/6th) which suggest gearbox ok and selector mechanism is faulty.

Now what do I do ?

Go to an independent garage ?

Go to Toyota locally ?

I am sure some of you have intimate knowledge of gearboxes and selector mechanisms so I will open this up[ for discussion - hope you can help me :)

Getrag have now released all the parts to be able to rebuild these boxes.. I know a Getrag specialist in London who have helped me with some issues I had a long time

A so called Supra specialist fitted a clutch and flywheel incorrectly and then told me that my gearbox was done in which was completely WRONG..

Yup, I've got the 50+ pages of Toyota manual stripdown and rebuild instructions, and the parts diagrams, SSTs required, and even the dollar price of all the bits. But it's not a job I can do myself, so...

... I need to find someone I can trust :) 5th gear is the first bit you see after the bellhousing as well! Easy ;)

My gearbox is being stripped down by Gearlink Ltd (Salisbury) today.

We believe the aluminium arm on the 4th rail is destroyed or at least severely damaged and this explains why both 5th and 6th gear have gone.

The problem is that this arm metal will be flying round the gearbox so I have handed the car over before anymore mileage is done on her.

The cost of removal, stripping, fault finding, spares, fixing and refitting has been quoted to me as £600 + VAT.

The sooner I win the lottery the better :)

The problem is not stripping them down but getting the parts. They dont want you fixing them they want you to buy a new gearbox. I have searched the internet and cannot find a Getrag Supplier in the UK. Some engineering firms dont even want to know about them, prefering the easier gearboxes to fix.

If anyone has a contact for Getrag supplies (or even a new gear box) then I would be very grateful.

Thanks my friend, the boys at Gearlink are opening her up as we speak.

If the condition is bad then I will buy the gearbox.

I am sure there are people here who could use the parts :)

If all is well, and there is not too much damage, then I will be ringing your contact for a odd spare.

Cheers again . . .

Update:

Gave him a ring, he has no v161 getrag spares at the moment :(

(Only Lotus Carlton boxes)

A very good parts source for getrag parts at a KILLER price is Elmhurst in the US. Ask to speak to Curt.

If they can get the parts get them 24 hour fedex'd

Thanks TRD3000GT, regretably the helical boys have nothing for Supra Getrag Gearboxes.

This afternoon I will get confirmation on the precise nature of the gearbox fault.

I have a gearbox from Japan waiting in storage (fully reconditioned) for £850 +VAT. But obviously this is an outlay I would rather not have to pay if I can help it.

Selector mechanism is fekked, its high tensile steel so a bugger to fix.

The engineering team say it can be fixed and no new gearbox is required.

The gearbox lies in pieces but I have faith in GearLink Ltd, they say it will be done by Friday :)

Updates when I have them . . . .

Ok all done :)

They machined the parts needed, fitted them inside and put the box back on.

It cost £705 inclusive of tax.

A bit poo that the money had to be paid out but good that they were able to do it and at short notice.

They said next time bring a Getrag gearbox with me because this box is on its last legs ;)

Also found emulsified oil in the differential - not good. (checked on last service my ass !)

Also found clutch to dragging (and adjusted).

So Taz is back on the road but I get the feeling my bills will just keep coming in with this one . . . . such is the life of a modified Supra owner :)
